CEL, p173B, new thermostat, and 2nd temp sensor, WTF

The code will not clear!!!! 3 weeks ago, maybe a month, I changed the thermostat. Last week the light came back with p173B, so i ordered a new temp sensor.

I installed a new thermostat, and im on my 2nd temp sensor. My coolant level in the jug is just below max and I just turned the bleed screw and no air came out.

All my searching lead to all the above issues. I did have a p0128 which did go away when I changed the thermostat. No CEL for a few weeks, and now this code will not go away.

What is left???

I have the same issue on my 08 clubman.
P0128 keeps popping up after I changed my thermostat 5 months ago. Changed a new sensor still have the same problem.
I used a OBD2 scanner to monitor the engine coolant temperature and found out it was between 200-205 F (93-97 C). Not sure if it's a normal range.

That's normal, anywhere from 190 to 205.

Mine reads fine too. I hope this isn't a dealer only shenanigans issue.

I feel my car is running rich, recent mpg is 24, total mpg 31.5 though. It might be related to thermostat problem.

if you remove the plug from the thermostat housing, do you still have the issue or another CEL code pops up? also, there are two plugs on the housing, removing the second one will make any change in CEL codes?

The code has no change, plugged or unplugged. In my torque app the temperature goes to dashes, so it's working. I don't get it

do the fans kick in when the car heats up? did you check the fuses? do you have another scanner to see other codes that your scanner isnt picking up? Autozone, maybe can check.

The fans do seem to run lots, even before it comes up to temperature.

Ugh. 2 bad temp sensors in a row?

Mmmm, I wonder if you open the reservoir cap when the car is hot, do you get pressure or coolant trying to escape? If not, you might want to check your water pump. It maynot be circulating water and the sensor is feeling the same temp whether the fan runs or not! Coopers have been reportedly failing the water pump. Just keep an eye on that.

She just showed me a video of the fans running a few minutes after shutdown and standing outside the car.

When I did the thermostat, the coolant seem to circulate, as there was no heat in the cabin until it ran and came up to temp.

I've heard of people accidentally swapping two of the electrical connectors on the thermostat. Apparently there are two that have the same style connectors. Might want to check.

Well, just finally got to it. I unplugged the sensors, and tried to swap them, they did not fit!

They have a "tooth" on each plug in a different spot, and color coded to match the sensor.

Plugged them back in, hooked up my obdII into the port and started the car.

No CEL!!?!!? What?? I scanned it, and the code was there, but the light is off (and so were the fans). I then attempted another clear, and light still out, code still present.

Whatever.

Maybe I'll drive 2 hours to a mini dealer sometime in the next few months.

😶

How’s it runnin?

How’s everything? I did have one question regarding the engine idle before the repair. Was the engine running rough and at low idle? Thanks for your help

Well its been a while since that issue. Since then i found my idling issues, see my other thread on the chipped valve.

However since then i havent been able to keep engine temps above 140F. I have replaced the thermostat 2x. I just got done today installing a new Water Pump, thinking it was weak, or something.

At the shop, everything bled normal, and the coolant temp went up to 230, and then back to 180. Took it for a road test, heat in the cabin was great...

Went back to the shop and bled more air from the thermostat.

Drove home on the highway and the temp kept dropping. Ended up at 105 at the offramp. From there to home is all uphill, and it topped out at 140F.

Wtf.

New thermostat, new radiator, new hoses, new Water Pump. System holds pressure, no leaks.

Im at a loss, i hate this car.

Someone help.
