2013 Cooper S thermostat failure
2013 Cooper S thermostat failure
I have read the many messages on here about this problem, but I would like some additional input. This Mini has 60k on the odometer and the car's interior heat failed, then the next day the check engine light came on, then at highway speed the engine started to lose power, so I was able to stop and pull over after about 3 minutes. I know that the thermostat and/or housing failed, but what worries me is that the engine acted like something catastrophic was occurring - like an alternator gradually failing - the dash error lights came on in rapid succession. Am I correct in assuming that the computer system shut down the engine because the coolant had all leaked out? (upon opening the hood I clearly saw coolant had sprayed from the area of the thermostat and the overflow bottle was empty). The engine was hot but it did not look like it had badly overheated. I an going to fill up the overflow bottle with coolant tonight and see if it will start and say my prayers. What are the chances that the engine got hot enough to warp the cylinder head or crack the block? Other info: Weather was cool - around 55 degrees F when this occurred.
My 09 clubman s did the same but in my case i forgot to clamp the bottom hose..lol. the check engine came on and lost power. I stopped for half hour then continued for 15 minutes to find a store. Filled it up and drive another 40 minutes home just fine. I think/hope you'll be fine. Just fix the issue and clear the codes.
If your thermostat failed, check www.mini-rp.com to see if they issued a service bulletin for your car. I had mine replaced in 2016 and MINI reimbursed me for the full repair. Just make sure the shop uses OEM parts because MINI wants proof. Or just ask your Mini dealer to do the repair if your car shows up on that site.
