R50/53 Why does my 03 MCS motor sound like a BELL when it idles?
Why does my 03 MCS motor sound like a BELL when it idles?
Anyone have this sound, it is coming from the right side of the engine compartment but have NO idea what it is.
I am not referring to any bells that go on in the car when it is cold.
Thanks!

How many miles do you have on it? Does it change when the engine speed increases? Is it more noticable when the engine is cold and does it decrease as the engine heats up?
GM and Subaru cars are known to commonly have a ringing sound due to "piston slap" although nearly all makes of cars have this problem. In piston slap the piston has excessive movement in the cylinder due to a couple of different problems.
In GM cars the problem is excessive clearance in which there is too much space between the cylinder wall and the ring. It is generally considered to be more nuisance than problem unless there is excessive oil usage. I don't believe GM will even fix the problem under waranty, bu sone ring redesign was done to correct it.
In the Subaru engines the problem is due to rocking of the pistol on the wrist pin and is described by some as a ringing and others like a rattling noise that is akin to the ping from a diesel.
If you are not using oil and change oil at proper intervals you should be OK, but I would have a good mechanic check it out.

GREAT, these all sound pretty serious.
It is coming from an area close to the passenger side wheel well area, close to the SC, but it is pretty loud and "tingy" so it souinds fairly superficial.

OK, I just went and spent some time trying to figure it out.
K-huevo might be on to something.
The noise is coming from the area between the wheel well and the motor, there is a little silver spring with a thin shaft down the middle of it, kind of like the shape and size of a dip stick. It is just slightly ringing as it rattles based on engine vibration. when I touch it and stabilize it, the noise goes away. Seems to be a little worse with the engine is hot and hardly there when it is cool.
Ideas?

I guess this is what you're speaking of; tensioner stop limiter.

This sound could be the result of a blown strut seal, failed strut grommet, worn tensioner pulley, or loose bracket mounting. If you can see the tensioner arm bouncing it may be time to replace the bracket.
It could also be a wobbly crankshaft vibration damper. Take tension off the belt, grab the crankshaft pulley and try to move it; if it can be rocked even a little, it's on the way out.

That is EXACTLY the part. The "Strut" parts you are talking about, are those parts within this spring set up or you talking suspension parts??
How do I figure out what part it is??

what happens if I just leave it alone?
