Braided brake lines
Braided brake lines
While I was buying parts for my Mini from England, I threw a set of braided brake lines into the shopping cart. Time to finally install them yesterday. What a pain in the neck, even with a hoist!
The 2 front lines have different connections from each other, and the 2 rear lines, while the same as each other, are different to either of the fronts.
Front passenger side (my car is RHD), there is a 24mm locking nut that holds the line in place against the subframe. This must be completely removed and slid up the hardline to expose the 11mm nut that seals the lines together. This is all done through a rectangular access hole, maybe 1 1/2 inches high by 3 wide.
The drivers side, uses a banjo bolt connection. The access hole is covered by a large steel plate that I had to bend out of the way. I removed the banjo bolt, then had to work on the 24mm retaining nut. What a pain in the proverbials! There was no way I could have done it without a 24mm socket and a 90 degree bending ratchet.
The rears weren't such a pain but were impossible to access with the wheels on.
Anyway, after about 4 hours, my Mini has nice braided brake lines. I decided to wait on the clutch line coz it was almost dinner time.

Looks good, performance it shouldn't make a lot of difference since I'm not pushing the car hard enough to get brake fade. It will prevent any possible rubber dessication issues with the Vegas anti-humidity though.
Make sure they aren't too long, and rub against the front caster rods. If so, they will fray. You can wrap them with the special plastic wrap availible at your local speed shop.

Agro-Had you employed one of those leggy models as an assistant, I'd bet you would have gone all the way and installed the clutch cable, too.
(I would have!)
Nomodmini-You've owned each of the cars in your sig? That's prolific. It would be hard for me to let go of a 55 speedster, 930 and 914/6. Wait a minute, the second I noticed a puff of smoke from the 930--I'd let go really fast.

I agree with you on that one!
