Soda Addiction???
Soda Addiction???
I am just wondering if anybody else is severly addicted to soda (aka pop, coke, etc.) I keep a supply at the office so I do not have to buy from the vending machine and today I was out and then the vending machine was out (whole nother story there) so I ran next door and had a coffee instead. All day I have felt like crap and figured it was my not getting a soda. So I went and bought some soda and just had my first sip of the day and I already feel better!!
So it is not the caffinee, because the coffee did not make me feel better, there is just something about soda that makes me feel better. Am I alone in this addicition?

I'm not, but I had a teacher once who was addicted to Diet Coke. She averaged almost 20 a day. Eventually she admitted herself to the hospital and was there for a few days while she had to get weaned off of it. Crazy.
Hi, my name is Donia...
I've been soda pop free for about two years now!!!
Been there, done that, and had all the headaches to prove it.
I can honestly say that I really don't miss it, but it took going cold turkey and dealing with some really bad withdraws.

Hi, I'm Dave.........
(Chorus: Hi Dave...)
I've been the 20 diet Coke a day guy, but I'm down to less the 4 now, and sometimes only 1 or 2.
We have a free soda fountain at work, so I can top off my 20 oz mug anytime I want........I tried succesfully to get off of it for a while by drinking Crystal light, but then just became addicted to it.........sigh..........

I use to drink 6-7 Mountain Dews a day, but wifey had an intervention and helped me kick that habit. Now I usually have 2 cans of Coke Zero a day and drink water the rest of the time. The latest addiction I'm trying to kick is my candy bar a day habit. Wifey is actually an enabler on this one because of the bags of minature candy bars she keeps at the house for her store visits
You may want to reconsider drinking such high volumes of carbonated beverages containing large quantities of high fructose corn syrup (hfcs).
While experts don't quite agree on how bad hfcs is for you, there are several studies that link its consumption in high volumes directly to obesity. Additionally, carbonated beverages in large volumes contribute to osteoporosis (even in men) through the interaction of phosphates and calcium carbonate and they can also cause you to form kidney stones.
Stick with water or fruit juice. If you need a caffeine boost, tea or small amounts of coffee work without having too adverse an effect on your body.
I was a up to the equivalent of 8 cups of coffee (in the form of soda and coffee) a day during medical school and residency and it took quite a while to wean myself down, but it is definitely worth it long term.
My 2 cents.

You are correct, no hfcs in diet sodas. They do contain aspartame, for better or worse. They other side effects I mentioned (bone demineralization and possible development of kidney stones) still apply.
I still drink soda occasionally--probably the equivalent of one or two cans a month--nothing beats pizza with a coke (or beer.) As with most things, the key is moderation. Most of my physician friends require a caffeinated beverage or two to get going in the morning (as do I.) But very few people can tolerate the 10-20 cans of soda a day without adverse side effects (including weight gain.)

I know I need to cut back 20+ a day is rough mostly on my stomach but over all the biggest problem I have had (14 years of this) is the lack of effect of caffeine on my system takes 3 or 4 cups of coffee to even notice.
The one time I went off of it for 3 weeks and as little as a single glass of diet coke I had a good strong buzz

You've just described the effect of how a body reacts as it develops tolerance to a drug--be it caffeine (in your case), alcohol, etc.... The more you use, the more you need to achieve the same effect.
In addition to the previously mentioned effects we talked about, carbonated beverages stimulate the production of gastric acid--which when secreted out of proportion to the requirements of your stomach can lead to the development of gastric ulcers. If you also have reflux, the increased acid production will damage your esophagus.
If all of these issues haven't caused you to reconsider your soda intake, try reading this article:

The effects are the same for diet or nondiet soda.

I use to drink soda non stop, I stopped drinking it for several months and now only drink one a day, sometimes two if I am out. Another thing to remember about soda is how all the sugar and acid attack your teeth.
Been off Diet Coke for two weeks now, and its going...ok...now, I would burn through a fridge pak in a weekend, now its just coffee. Although I likes me a Orange Crush
as a "dessert" once in awhile. I read that Jones soda uses cane sugar ( still not good ) instead of HFCS because it digests better throught the body ( sugar still not good )

Teeth are porous and the beverages are leeching calcium from the teeth and weakening them--making them more prone to cavities and/or root canals.
BK (before kids) I routinely drank 2-3 CASES of coke a day...developed breast lumps which the doc attributed to the excessive caffeine consumption. I had to quit cold turkey
and take vitamin E to help break-down the lumps. It all worked, but man-oh-man...the headaches & grumpiness!I still drink coke, but I need to cut back on it again...
