JCW GarageInterested in John Cooper Works (JCW) parts for your 2nd Generation MINI? This is where JCW upgrades and accessories for the MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S (R56), and Cabrio (R57) MINIs are discussed.
A little bit of sut on the bottom part of the tip ... I have no idea if it's running too rich ?? ... They're not like, COVERED, I just figured a little black dirt was normal ...
hmm
Stock R56S had a lot of carbon on the pipes. After JCW Tuning Kit little to none. I originally asked MA about the carbon and they checked "mixture" and found no problems. "Mixture" OK? WTF?
Now, no carbon with the new exhaust and ECU. So, I guess all is well
My tail pipes have the same thing but so does my wife's stock MCS. I do notice that the JCW pipe tips will show the sut more than the original tips.
Mine had quite a bit of carbon both before and after having the JCW kit installed. I had hoped that the JCW tips would hide the carbon, but it's even more apparent. I considered painting the area inside the tips black with high-temp paint, but figured it would come off eventually.
Every stock R56 MCS I have seen has exhibited the same issue; mine is the only R56 MCS JCW I have seen in person.

I called the dealer and they said the more ethonal in fuel, the more carbon on the pipes. Kind of makes sence. I was using BP. He said try Shell, Texaco or Citgo. What fuel are you using?

My stock 08 MCS was thickly coated on the bottom half of the exhaust tips with black soot. I wiped it off recently and I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe it was a break in thing...
Graet idea

I've only ever used Shell V Power since day one. I did a lot of research before filling up to find the best little-to-no ethanol solution after reading about previous generation MINIs with damaged fuel pumps.
Since this country switched from leaded fuel every car I have owned has had a black sooty exhaust. In the old days you could tell a good running car by it's light gray color in the tail pipes. Now with no lead it is soot city. I think your MINI is normal.

I think these are the good old days.
I filled up on Shell this morning and toped it off with some FI cleaner. High content ethonal is poison for the Mini. The girl is running better already. BP gas...the queen can keep it.
