I have left-over rubber paint and will do your OEM tow hook...

Recently I located my OEM tow hook (it's in the black foam insert that's cushioning your battery, in case you were wondering - I almost bought one because I thought I didn't get one... dur) and wanted that cool, red look that I've seen other cars sporting:

So, I went out and bought a can of red, rubberized liquid paint. This material, designed to be used on tool handles, leaves the hook with a cushioned, waterproof coating that should not chip like spray paint. I have enough paint left over to do several hooks if people don't want to be bothered to go out and buy a can of their own - just drop me a PM and I'll send you my address. I'll put a double coat of red rubber on the hook and ship it back. All I ask is that you enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the postage covered so I can get it back to you. If you don't enclose an envelope, please include like $5 and I'll send it back USPS Priority Mail (last I checked, I think Priority was about $4.75, give or take). Tips are appreciated but not required.

NOTE: The rubber coating, while tough, probably will not suffice if the hook is actually used for its intended purpose. Best to purchase an extra, unpainted hook at some place like Outmotoring if you need an actual tow and don't want to mar the finish.

Great way to use up the leftover stuff - it won't stay fresh for long.

For any of you who want to do this on your own, check local hardware stores for this product. It comes in several different colors.

Yep, that's the stuff I have.

FYI - I hear you can extend its life by putting a peice of tin foil in-between the lid and the product. It's only like $10 a can, but I figure if I can help some folks out then I might as well. If I end up with extra even after this I might buy a second hook for my rear bumper...

Hey Matt, I'd sure like you to put a coat on mine. I'll be gone until Sunday. I'll call you when I get back in town.

Thanks!

How do you get your towhook to be straight? When I put mine in for track days, if I screw it in all of the way, it's always tilted. Do you just not screw it in all the way?

mb

Edit - nevermind, found your other thread.

Yep, that's the one.

I used a blob of silicone sealant in the threads, but others have used either silicone tape or simply cranked it in VERY HARD with a pipe wrench. As I was afraid of stripping the threads or bending something, I went with silicone so I could later remove the hook if I needed to.

Dude, rubber paint + doorhandles. No more worrying about chipping it with rings and such.

I still have enough paint to do at least 2 more hooks if anyone's intrested - just PM me if so. Better do it quick - I hear that the paint dries out after a few weeks, so if you want it done let me know before the remainder's skinned over!

Outmotoring.com sells them for like $15. They're the OEM ones.

Um... I shook the can a week ago and it's somehow miraculously still liquid... I used a layer of tin foil to seal it and it seems to have worked. If you like, I can pick you up a hook at Outmotoring on Saturday (I'll be there for our monthly club event) and dip it for you if the paint's still viable. If not, I can just mail it to you unpainted via USPS and you can dip it yourself - the paint's available at Lowe's for about $10 a can and it will do SEVERAL hooks. You can pay me back via Paypal if you have it... let me know!

ImagoX is the red close to the chili red color? Could you please take a pic of the can and post it here. I looked at Lowe's and couldn't find it and the employees didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Thank you!
