Schroth Harness

I see quite a few pictures of cars here with the Schroth harness installed. I understand that the harness is a "quick fit". Can someone explain where the harness attaches? I understand that the right hand connector fits into the existing factory female belt fitting and utilizes the belt pretensioner. Just where do the others fit and how?

There is 2 extra clips that you have to bolt in for the left side connectors and then the back right clicks into the back seat belt latch. The front left hooks to a clip that you bolt to the floor where the factory seatbelt is bolted to. And then the back left you have to remove the bottom seat cusion of the seat and bolt a clip to the factory seat belt location. Not a very Detailed explination but still gives you and idea of where everything goes.

Schroth

You will have to buy a Torx (size 40 or 50 I don't remember which) male socket, but that is only a few bucks and should be in your kit anyway. My Schroth book said the rear used a 17 MM (11/16) but in fact it was a Torx the same size as the front connector. Keep the "old" bolt so you have something to put back in if you move the Schroth to a different car. The rear bolt from MINI is Galvanized, but the Schroth replacement bolt is not. Coat it with some kind of protectant, as I noticed it sticks through the floor pan and is exposed to road salt. Once that thing rusts you will never back it out!

For the front left connector, bend it to be away from the seat and toward the cars rocker panel. I did mine the other way at first, and it abraded the stock belt and made a mark on the seat.

Has anyone tried the new CG Lock http://www.CG-Lock.com ? I have heard a lot of good things about this device, and for occassional autocross or track use, it looks like a good solution for $39.95.

(sorry for the previous bad post)

That would work whole bunches of better if you spelled it correctly and left off the "?".... But thanks for the pointer.

And your link is not spelled any better though it gets people there anyway. Lighten up on spelling errors if it gets the point across.

I had the Scroth in my MCS but sold them when the local BMW club wouldn't allow them at school days without a 1/2 cage. They are great but you could not use them safely (or legally around here) on the street as you cannot look over your shoulder to see what's coming up behind you when pulling out etc.

I then bought the GC locks and like them but they are no real substitute for proper harness. Help and definately worth the price.

Thanks for all of the info guys (and gals - difficult to tell from your sigs  ).

GordonG I though that they were street legals as the had the DOT seal or whatever. Are you just saying that from your experience you cannot turn your upper body to see over your shoulder?

I have it and it worked fine for me during autox. Lap belt will hold your butt in place but, you still have forward movement of upper body. I find that a benefit for autox but would suggest that a harness would be better (and safer) for track usage.

I have two Schroth harnesses for a MINI for sale. Light usage, no emergency usage, in black with gray Schroth markings on the shoulder straps. PM me if interested.

Graham

OK why am I selling them? I'm getting a harness bar and the Schroths won't fit. I need to replace them with full race harnesses.

Cage?

I can't for the life of me understand why they would outlaw them if you don't have a cage. They have to be light years ahead of a normal lap belt.

And regarding street usage -- don't tighten the right shoulder so much. When I had them in my Quattro I would tighten the left one but leave the right just loose enough so that I could shoulder check over my left shoulder.

South of the border here in the Land of Lincoln we don't have to be able to shoulder check over our right shoulder, just the left. Or, if we have to over the right, I'd like someone to tell me.

I absolutely loved them installed in my Audi. I was very bummed when I couldn't get them retrofitted to fit in my Viggen. I sold them to a guy in a chipped A4 at a track day.

An older thread that discussed Schroth harnesses and safety concerns.

I've heard that for BMW CCA driving events/schools you need to have similar restraints for driver and passenger.

Another safety comment-

"As for myself, I prefer the stock seat belts as they are designed with your safety in mind. I would only put 4 or 5 point harnesses if I had a roll bar in my car. Why? If the car does roll and you are wearing 4 or 5 point harnesses, you will be snug in your seat and will not be able to move. This is good, but if the roof structure crushes, it will come down on your head and then your spine. With the factory seat belts, the roof may crush, but the belt has some give so you may submerge. The roll bar, on the other hand, will prevent your roof from crushing, so you will be safe with the 4 or 5 point harness."
