schroth harness GB interest? (sorry...Hawaii only for now)
hi all. who here is interested in getting a Schroth Harness for their MINI?
**edit: Group buy will be through a MCO sponsor**
wait!!!!! before you say it is a PITA to put in blah blah.. look at the awesome design.
the following place has a good description of it and the install.
http://www.soloracer.com/minirallye4.html
the following link is on this board regarding this harness.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...amp;topic=8598
-a 4 point design - attached to the car at 4 points. (typical of any)
-no holes need to be drilled or made. uses existing belt clips and comes with adapters. you can remove the harness when not in use in a matter of snaps.
we would like to have 5 to get this going. anyone who goes to the track for SCCA or Driving School would be able to use this belt and enjoy not having to use the steering wheel to keep yourself stable. yay....no more bruised knees from bracing against the door. this product looks very very good.
post here if interested. or PM me if positive and i'll need the info ala mini-t style. the price should be good as usual or else we wouldn't do it of course. b

issues:
-does not interfere with space or folding down the seats. (*with harness unclipped probably less than a minute)
-DOT approved!!!!
-can be removed very, very, very easily.
-designed to supposedly prevent submarining action
-works with stock seats too.
-supposed to allow airbag deployment properly as well since it uses the factory seat belt clip.
it really looks like a good product.

Now you have a GB after staying up til 1 AM installing the DEIST 4 pt harness on my MINI before the autocross race
I'm interested but what kind of deal can we get with 5 or more?
The Schroth Harness is a sweet set up and a lot more easier to install than the rigging I had to do without drilling any new holes.
My only caveat is the price....so what kind of deal are we talking here?!

I'm interested- do we have 5 now? Drivers side only. There is a separate set for passenger.
Also I'd like the shoulder pads too in contrasting color (no not football shoulder pads).

Heres how they look installed, on both sides, with the extra pads also, which IMHO are needed for better comfort even if you went to Sparco harnesses which are 3" wide, and the Schroths are 2" wide .........

Not quite true. You can fold down the back seat rests part way, but to fully lower the backs you need to readjust the tension and futz around to move the belts aside. I did it, and now I have an excuse not to take back seat passengers.

I bought a set a few weeks ago. You do have to purchase a special Torx(TM) socket of a very large (T-50) size to get the stock seat belt attachments off to add the Schroth attachments. If you do a group Hawaii buy, somebody should get the socket and pass it around.
Took about an hour to install. Seconds to remove and re-install. Really nice, especially if you have the flat stock seats.

thanks nuvolari for first hand insight.
regarding folding the rear seats down, with the schroth harness unclipped, it looked like the seat should go down without any trouble. with only the adapter left attached, is the adapter the part that needs to be fiddled with for the seat to go fully down? if it is the adapter that affects it, i want to include that in my post.
everyone, i should have the necessary torx bit/socket that is needed and everyone can use mine.
thanks b

No, I just found that once I had the necessary tension on the belts (which form a V in the back, one side going to the outside and one going to the center, there wasn't enough slack to lower the back flat. If you slacken the belts in the back you can spread the V enough to lower the seat.
Afterwards, if you raised the back seat up again you would have to readjust the tension on the back a little to hold you firmly. No big deal, but you do have to adjust the tension to make room for the seat back if you lower it. I just decided to lower the backs, adjust the tension, and then just say I can't carry any passengers. I would if I had to, but I choose not to.
If you choose to take out the belts when you want to use the back seats folded down there is absolutely no problem. If you want to use the belts and fold the seats down, you have to adjust the belts to leave enough room.
Come to think of it, I had the front attachments in place when I tried to lower the seat backs. Had I released those I might well have got enough slack to spread the V enough to fold down the seat back and then reattach the front mounts when I got back in the car. Guess I'll have to give that a try tomorrow.

I took a picture of how the harness looks from the back with the seats folded down. If you release the front attachment you can, of course, spread the V so that the seats will fold down. I'm afraid I have to blame my mother for the reason I didn't figure this out in the first place: if she hadn't dropped me on my head as an infant....

Thinking about this group buy-
Why would we need to limit it to Hawaii only unless we were getting some sort of shipping discount to one address.
This is offset by the greater numbers that might be had if we opened up the group buy to all MCO.
Set a date and see if we can get a greater discount on the item. Shipping cost can still be minimized
if we all have ours in Hawaii sent to one address then distribute from there and split the shipping cost.
All other group buys I have done were for MCO as a group and I still found it to be OK.
Group buy for us in Hawaii is something new.
Just thinking about a volume discount.

minihune: that is what i told tontobird to try if he wanted to arrange a groupbuy and then merge the total together. this GB was planned be based upon shipping to 1 address(business address) and then distributed.
anyone else interested? pm me.

That is fine for the Hawaii order but I think that if enough other people wish to participate we might get a discount for the larger total number plus do better with our own shipping arrangement so doubly good for us.
Just a thought to save a bit more. Most volume discounts are based on getting more units sold so 10 or even 20 is best. 5 is still small order but some
discount is better than none- so thanks for your efforts.

Yes, agreed that the GB can be overdone and majorly messed up. Also there are delays and complications galore.
Well if you like to keep it simple and we can still get some benefit then that is a good game plan with me. Hope to see you this sunday at the movie.
