Greetings, I really like the MCS Chrome gas cap and wish to put something similar onto my MC when it get here. The thing is I wish not to get too involved with having to paint the inlet of the MC gas area like Mfergusun did (strong work by the way). MiniMania.com has an after market solution that "flips up" to reveal the regular MC gas cap below. Does anyone have this and be willing to comment on it?

Thanks,

Driving Hamster

Driving_Hamster,
The MINI Mania Gas cap is the same as what you've seen here on MCO. The only difference is that MINI Mania didn't paint the insert. I've seen Peter's MINI (Our friend at Rspeed who did the mod) and can tell you that It looks great! The Chrome cover flips up to reveal the plastic gas cap (Just as the MCS would).
IMO this is a very nice Mod for the Cooper.... Adds a nice touch with the other chrome bits in place.
Hope this helps,
SW

As mentioned above... the Chrome cover flips open to reveal the plastic cap.

The mini we purchased is Pepper White with the Black roof. I also got the chrome bumper inserts and black roof spoiler. The "ring around the gas cap" of the aftermarket MCS gas cap is the same color as the black that lines the outer edges of the wheel wells. I think this would look great on a PW/B roof with the chrome bumpers. Too bad you guys are on the west coast other wise I would drop some $$ your way to install this for me. I can follow directions to a T but I am just deadly afraid of scratching the exterior paint on the mini. It's like giving your kid a scar, ya know? I think I still may attempt this those when the mini comes in.

Thanks and any additional pointers would be appreciated.

retroom,
This is a picture of the final product. For more info check out our How-to Articles. There you will also see more detailed pictures.

Driving_Hamster,
I can understand your fear of scratching the paint. I would have the same fear.
"Too bad you guys are on the west coast".......... Actually.... Rspeed (and myself for that matter) is located on the East coast..... But I don't think it would help much as they are based in Atlanta, GA. (your in PA..... Right?)

The idea you mentioned of leaving the trim black to match the fenders seems like it may work as well. You may also consider having your local body shop paint it or do the install.

What ever you decide I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Happy Motoring,
SW

Handy Hank's Helpful Hint - most of the instruction I've seen for installing the chrome gas cap say the best way to get the old cap off is to remove the wheel & wheelwell in order to remove the old hinge, the slide the rubber grommet off after squirting it down with WD-40, and slide the new one on after squirting it down with WD-40.
Being fearful of all thing petroleum near paint, I've always had success using liquid K-Y. It's water-based, so it won't harm paint, plastic, rubber, vinyl, etc. It cleans up nicely and there'll be plenty left over for whatever else you'd care to do with it...

Does anyone know where I can get the inner ring of the gas cap painted? I have contacted my dealer twice but have not heard back from them. The dealer did offer to intsall the cap for me....for $475!!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
