I notice this problem too. Maybe some sort of device might help this, mud flaps or something. Not a wing though...

Yeah, I think CooperSpeed is right. I think the dirt mostly comes up from the bottom of the car, not the top, so a wing wouldn't really help, but it certainly might look cool

I wonder if even better flaps would help this, or if they are even available? Hm...

Rear mudflaps have been tried and it was reported that they didn't really keep the back end clean. Ditto with any type of wing. Sorry. You're just gonna have to clean your bum more often.

Is SSMini and I the only one who has ever owned a truck? I know exactly what he is talking about. The back of the MINI is very blunt similar to an SUV. When the car is moving forward air rushes from the ground up and picks up dust that settles on the back of the MINI. This happens on trucks also. You can buy rear wings that attach to the back of an SUV that takes the air comming over the roof and deflects it downward over the rear window down the back of the car/Truck. This prevents the air from drawing dirt of the road and depositing it on the back of the Vehicle. I haven't seen anything like this for the Mini and if they do make one it probably won't be very pleasing to the eye. I feel your pain... Good coat of wax and a California Car Duster will help clean it up quickly.

I own a black MCS...and I can feel your pain. When I wash and wax, the back'll get dusty again before I get to the end of the block. I've heard that the mud flaps don't help much, as the water/dust is coming from the airflow, not the tires (as has been mentioned here). I agree 100% with Super_MINI...extra coats of wax and a California Duster are your new best friends!

Super_MINI has it right. It's all about aerodymanics. Air is moving faster over tha top of the car than under it creating a vaccum at the back of the car. Because the back is flat and not tapered, it has a vortex effect that sucks dirt and dust up and around to be deposited on the car.

Most wings are designed to create a downforce at high speeds to maintain traction on the rear wheels. What you would need is an air deflector to direct the airflow down the back of the car. This would probably disrupt the vaccum effect enough to help some.

The people above that said it's due to the MINI having the aerodynamics of a brick are correct. No spoiler is going to fix that.

Any wing that would have a positive effect on the wash of dirt and muck on the back of the car would have to be so big and at such an angle that it would play hell with the normal handling of the car, sap your fuel mileage, and just plain look huge and ugly.

Any vehicle with a broad, flat rear surface is affected with this problem. It's physics and aerodynamics in play. The most effective way to prevent this is to drive in reverse.

If you want to see something really amazing go down a leaf coverd road at a decent speed say about 40. The mini sucks up every leaf and blows it up against the rear hatch. The first time i washed my car i did the standard quck lap around the block to blow the majority of water off the car before final drying. Was i suprised when i got to the back of the car and found it covered with wet dust and assorted crap from the road. I learned my lesson that day.Page Title maxmini home site
