Gas Cap chrome to body color flap?

I just bought a 2010 Mini Cooper S in Horizon Blue. It has the chrome gas cap and I actually prefer the normal body color flap. Has anyone done this before? I would think it's a simple process but would be interested in previous experiences. Also is anybody out there willing to swap my chrome gas cap with their Horizon Blue cap?

Thanks!

Emily

It's not as simple as you think but it's somewhat easy. The easiest thing to do is paint the chrome cap body color.

Emily, all the S caps are chrome. I also have an HB and in the process of blacking mine out. Just have to figure out how to remove the cap from a 2010?

I did it on mine. I agree it looks much cleaner than the Cooper S gas lid

Nice looking car, VicSkimmr,

I especially like the Imperial vinyl logo on the side... In your case, I agree that the normal fuel filler door actually looks better, because it the original chrome one would be an unnecessary distraction.

How'd you do it

VicSkimmr
How did you do it? Is there a kit out there to purchase and then paint? I'd love to get further info on this. I definitely think it looks much cleaner and it's one of the first things on my list to change.
Thanks

You can go to the dealer and buy a kit for a regular Cooper and do the swap. If it's like a first generation car, then you have to Jack the rear of the car up and remove the wheel to get to the components. It'd be easier to have the chrome cap powder coated. If you want the body color flat door, just get the kit from the dealer. The problem is, I believe they have to be painted. And the turn around time required for swapping with somebody probably isn't worth it. Good luck.

Correct on all accounts. It would have to be painted, and it's also a PITA to install, but worth it

Vic's car is definitely nice and the Cooper door looks good on his. I was just the opposite when I had my 2003 Cooper. I switched to the S cap. The S cap is just to mimic the old Austin's filler cap anyway. I do suggest if anybody is having a Cooper S gas cap door painted, to have it powdercoated instead. Since it's made of metal, might as well get the durability of Powdercoating.

MCS gas cap is made of plastic, not metal. I just took mine off, sanded and painted it matte black. Don't powdercoat. It might melt.

Oh, another reason I consider the R56's toys. My R53 cap is made of metal. Sorry for the confusion.
