Retinting question...

I had a quick question regarding tint. I currently have tint on my vehicle yet I wish to go darker. Does my previous tint have to be taken off before I get my new stuff put on? How much of a hassle is this?

I'm pretty sure it has to come off. The tint shop should have some kind of detergent or chemical that temporarily nullify the stickiness so it peels of easy. I think it's the same stuff they use to apply the tint with.

Sometimes it can go on directly over top, but usually they take it off. And to remove tint you spray on detergent and water, stick a garbage bag over it to let it heat up a bit, then remove the bag and rub off the tint with steel wool... Don't know who came up with that but apparently it works.

It shouldn't take that long. I had the pleasure of seeing my tinter in action when one of his customers came back the day I was having my tint done because he received a "fix it" ticket. Took them just a few mins to remove the old tint by spraying something to the window first while removing the film at the same time, and then gently rubbing off the remaining sticky stuff from the window. He just let the window dry for like 30 minutes before placing the new tint.

steel wool on glass? id be afraid to do that.

most tint places prefer the tint to be removed. they wont normally warranty their work if they have to lay on top of other tint.

last time i removed my tint, i just picked at a corner, and then peeled it all off in one piece. the glue that was left behind got a shot of goo-gone, and scraped it clean with a razor blade.

Snyper I know you would know about tinting and since we live in the same area maybe you can tell me a good place to go and maybe how much it costs?

Yeah it has to come off. Just peel it. Detergent and Steel Wool is WAY old school. Todays tint just strips off and you deal with the adhesive with goo gone or something similar.
I just did my Lexus and ended up scratching the passenger side. I'm on the fence... leave it or strip it and start over.

One of the companies I work for manufactures window tint.

The proper and most effective way to remove window tint from a car is to mix up a 50% ammonia 48% water 2% dish soap mix and spray it liberally onto the window/tint and then cover the window with a garbage bag to stop it from evaporating and allow it to sit in the sun, or use a heat gun on the window if you have no sun.

Let it sit for about 15 minuits and the ammonia will attack the adhesive on the film and you should be able to peel the film off with your hand + a bit of persuasion from a razor blade. If any glue is left on the window just use goo gone or the same solution + the razor blade (a sharp blade will not scratch the glass, a dull one will)

I had a fix it ticket recently. Had to remove it, they have these 1 sided razor's to do it with the installer gave me some so i could remove it myself save $30. Wet it with soapy water just for lubrication and peel up a corner large sheets will come off but here and there you'll have to dig away with razor to remove stubborn strips. To be honest I wish I just paid the extra $30 to have the installer do it. Got my ticket signed off and redid the tint. Wire whool would scratch I'd think.
