Everytime I work under the bonnet of my MCS, I lose some skin on my hands

It's part of the game now!

Thanks guys. I'll look into it when it comes time to actually place an order. As of right now I have...$21 to my name. So I'm not buying anything for a least a month or so.

Actually, on second thought I have -$15 because I owe my mom money....

There are many issues to keep up with on this thread. So just to make certain before I buy anything, the latest recommendations are:?

1. Autometer Mounting Cup $14
2. Vacuum/Boost Gauge $50
3. Custom Extended bracket for more adjustabality? $15

And is it just as easy to install another Autometer mounting cup and place it on the opposite side with a different gauge (a/f ratio, H20 temp, oil temp, oil pressure)? Which would be the 2nd most important to have?

Instead of the extended bracket that requires a litle fabrication - pick-up the bracket from www.myminiparts.com. Peter took my modified extended bracket and made a nice one out of steel. It is 15 bucks as opposed to 6.95 but needs no work other tha a hole and is painted.

The brackets can be mount as you like and more then one is not a problem.

AF might be nice

I did both standard, tach on the sterring wheel column, and chrono-pack/ Navigation "twin gauges" on the steering wheel setup. Both didn't need any extended bracket.

You mean the "T" fitting to slplit the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator?

All the parts should be included with the gauge (at least Autometer)

DIY Gauge w/ Chrono Pack

Well, since nobody has posted a picture of the AM 2 5/8" Boost Gauge on the Chrono Pack per the original How-to, here they are:

I wish AutoMeter had gauges with chromed outer rings .
Anyhow, I have a couple of things to add.

My gauge did not come with a T-fitting, just the nylon tubing, so make sure you check before starting! To connect the "T" fitting to the nylon tubing you need a 5/32" to 1/8" vaccum reducer fitting, which is shown in the original pictures but I don't think it's mentioned in the write-ups. The connection to the fuel pressure regulator would probably be easier with a vaccum elbow fitting; just an afterthought, I didn't do it. I think the connection to the regulator would also be more secure that way. A #8 1 1/4" long phillips Self Tapping screw is a perfect fit for the rear tachometer bracket connection.

I am a bit concerned with the engine heat and the nylon and additional vaccum tubing. No technical info on heat and melting points or anything, just a concern since things tend to get quite hot in there. However, I think someone would have chimed in already if something would have happened, from his signature DarkMiniCooperS has over 100k miles I'm guessing with no issues (right ?).

BTW, I followed the original instructions with the exact gauge and mounting cups and found NO fitment issues. It is quite tight, but I actually found several different mounting positions with this setup. I just chose the position that will be the most viewable from a normal driving position. It blocks a bit of the A/C vent but nothing that causes concern (ask me again in July).

Lastly, the hardest part for me was the bulb replacement on the gauge. Seriously. That thing was on like cement in there. I actually showed a tech at PepBoys while getting the replacement bulb and they questioned whether it was replaceable or not . At the end I ended up crushing the darn thing and cleaning it up for the replacement.

Phew, I'm done with the post. Thanks to DarkMiniCooperS for the original post, and to the others have added opinions . I swear NAM is gonna make me go broke if I keep on finding other stuff to add to my car...It is a SERIOUS addiction.

if you picked up the mymini guage bracket, your rings wouldn't be so far back nor would you guages stick out past the speedo/tach.

Well, I think the angle of the picture plus the chrome is a bit misleading, the AM gauge is actually about 1/16" behind the level of the tach/speedo (basically flush) and not sticking out.

Agreed on the ring. The support on the back is not as intended on the part and the gauge does fit a little looser than I would have liked.

If you go thru this thread you will see wh ere I fabricated a custom bracket from an auto meter extended bracket. Peter of www.myminiparts.com liked
what I did and had a steel version made which he sells for 15 bucks. Gives you that extra flexibility.

Has anyone gone with a carbon fiber mounting cup? And what about a gauge with chrome trim?

OK, I called up Autometer directly, so here I go answering my own questions.

First, the chrome trim. If you send the gauge to their repair center they can add the "anodized" trim piece (which they use on the carbon fiber series gauges). This is pressed on using a specific jig that they use. This is apparently pretty easy for them, but the minimum charge for any repair shop work is $25. So you'd be looking at $25 + shipping each way.

Second, the carbon fiber mounting cup. I explained that I know that the ATM-3204 cup works for this application and the cup would have to have the same dimensions. I was told that cup #2152 is the one to get. I reiterated that this MUST be the same dimensions as the 3204 and I was assured that it is.

Lastly, I'm sure that this was already addressed, but the amber LED conversion is part #3287.

Just a helpful tip if you want it.
When I did my 3 gauge set up the Aurometer gauges came with both red and green "cap/covers" for the bulbs.
After much experemintation I used a paper punch and cut out the end of the red "thingy".
The color is ORANGE and matches the stock gauge color perfectly

Harder than I thought to take these photos.

More on my gallery, but hope this shows the actual color of the red covers with a hole punched in them.

It does look great!

But why installing the boost gauge upside-down??

I'd have a headache after 2 minutes of driving lol

When seated you I actually look "through" the stering wheel just like looking at speedo / tach.

This way I can see the full sweep of the gauge.

It works ... and no headaches for me.
Lets also be honest the boost gauge is really a wow, wow, fun gauge anyway.
I use it more on long trips to watch Vac to get best mileage.
