[Hawaii] - O.T. : any M.M.A. fans here?
Tonight's UFC had B.J.Penn (from Hilo, HI) move-up in weight (as an underdog) to take on the awesome Matt Hughes for the Welterweight championship. Penn won in the 1st round by rear naked choke! Let's hear it for the local boy!
i heard something on the radio tonight about ultimate fighting at gussie l'mours on nimitz on saturday nights...admission $5. supposedly, it's sponsored by one of the fighting organizations but i'm not sure if these are people off the street w/ no "real" mma experience? we might go before it's closed down!
ummm...what's a "rear naked choke"? does that somehow involve the bare booty?
and what's mma?
i heard gussie's used to have oil wrestling or something entertaining like that. does that involve the "rear naked choke" too, but in a shiny, slathered up way?

Gussie L'mours doesn't sound like a fighting joint (more like a cat fight joint) but sounds interesting. Hawaii has a lot of MMA talent; in fact, tonight's UFC had a debut of another Hawaii fighter named Ranato Verissimo (I think he trains with Penn) who beat veteran Carlos Newton! It was a judges decision but he schooled him on BJJ.
Hawaii has some respectable fights at the Blaisdale once in a while too.

kbs,
Rear naked choke is a submission move associated with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (which Penn is an expert at). M.M.A. stands for mixed martial arts. There was a U.F.C. (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fight tonight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (that was on P.P.V.).
I agree though, the Gussie match does conjure images of booty-moves but unfortunately, this involved a bunch of sweaty guys.

Enson Inoue is back in town for Friday's Super Brawl 35 and he brought a bunch of his people from his gym in Japan. Should be some good fights.

Enson and Egan are cool. I'm good friends with their dad so I hear all kinds of stories. Did you know one of the Gracies had a TRO on Egan?
Maybe mini-t can compete since she is a 3rd degree black belt in tongue fu.

beast,
I had to look up TRO. No, I didn't know that.
Enson is kind of past his prime and his body is all beat-up so I hope he can still throw-down. His last fight was a Pro Wrestling fight in Japan. I saw Enson fight a few times in Japan in Pride events. I like his talk - Yamato Damashi.
I guess the brother's were pretty good racketball players - read that on Enson's site.

I think it was Relson or Helson Gracie, whatever his name was that had the restraining order against Egan. I think Egan is the older one, but all that shoot fighting has taken it's toll on Enson's body.
The two boys were at the top of their game in racquetball and then made the switch to fighting. Do you know Japanese TV personality Alice Inoue? She was Egan's first wife.
