It's really happened. This is San Francisco Bay Area and Treasure Island is in the middle of the Bay Bridge the connects SF and Oakland.

Side bar .....
Technically that is NOT Treasure Island .... it is Yerba Buena island, immediately south of Treasure Island and connected by a man made causeway.
That house is the 'official residence' for the Coast Guard 3 star for the Pacific . . . .
it was last time I had dinner there anyway . . . Coast Guard Sector San Fran is on that side of the island and there are several houses in addition to this one, ex Navy housing, still used by USCG (last I heard)
When we would sail out from Alameda and make a slight 'left' (port) turn to head for the Bay Bridge and out of the Bay we'd pass the house from just about the same perspective in the photo .... some Admiral's wives would make a point to stand below the lighthouse and wave goodbye and good luck to the departing cutter.
Where the car sits is a 'protected seal colony' and not a jetty .... and there are no roads above or to the sides .... where the car sits is at the bottom of a cliff area ..... curious as to how it got there. Maybe MINI's float as good as old VW's? Anyone tried that out?

No one was in the vehicle and it was not immediately clear who it belonged to. The Mini Cooper ended up on its wheels, but had significant roof damage.

the article ends ....
the Coast Guard took over the investigation
hmmmmm, while a CG retired I question the experience of CG investigators in the stolen car arena . . .
I suspect the actual issue was jurisdiction ..... SF 'first responders' did their thing, but this is Federal property and USCG as OCCUPANT gets tapped.
So not TOOK OVER .... but was STUCK WITH :-)

You are correct that it is Yerba Buena. My ex husband used to work out there when it was still a military base. We Bayarea folks would referred to it as Treasure Island as a whole (obviously the opposite side of the island). After the '89 quake they did uncover objects from the World Fair that had been paved over on Treasure Island. My guess is someone launched the poor baby and that's where she landed. BTW great photo.

I like the CSI type investigation we have here. Funny we are probably more ahead in the investigation then the locals. The roof does not look that badly damaged.
