Oh, that picture just makes me sad :(.

Photoshop maybe? Where did you get the pics OP? I can't imagine how it got there, it appears to be in remarkably good condition if it rolled down that cliff..

It's been all over the news, I don't think it photoshopped.

AZdsrt 05-10-2015 06:14 PM

How about a link? Would love to know how it got there..

PS, my dad lives just outside of Apex. You guys getting rain from the tropical storm?

sltsnowbunny 05-10-2015 08:58 PM

It's really happened. This is San Francisco Bay Area and Treasure Island is in the middle of the Bay Bridge the connects SF and Oakland.

I'm on the north side of Raleigh and the rain has been bad at all.

Perverse, I know, but I am disappointed there was no body near it - I hate thieves,...

Side bar .....

Technically that is NOT Treasure Island .... it is Yerba Buena island, immediately south of Treasure Island and connected by a man made causeway.

That house is the 'official residence' for the Coast Guard 3 star for the Pacific . . . .

it was last time I had dinner there anyway . . . Coast Guard Sector San Fran is on that side of the island and there are several houses in addition to this one, ex Navy housing, still used by USCG (last I heard)

Attachment 146195

When we would sail out from Alameda and make a slight 'left' (port) turn to head for the Bay Bridge and out of the Bay we'd pass the house from just about the same perspective in the photo .... some Admiral's wives would make a point to stand below the lighthouse and wave goodbye and good luck to the departing cutter.

Where the car sits is a 'protected seal colony' and not a jetty .... and there are no roads above or to the sides .... where the car sits is at the bottom of a cliff area ..... curious as to how it got there. Maybe MINI's float as good as old VW's? Anyone tried that out?

JohnBLZ 05-12-2015 07:37 AM

Looking at the lack of rollover damage (that I see anyways)... my bet is odd it took a dip in the bay and washed up there. How though?

No one was in the vehicle and it was not immediately clear who it belonged to. The Mini Cooper ended up on its wheels, but had significant roof damage.

Capt_bj 05-12-2015 02:21 PM

the article ends ....

the Coast Guard took over the investigation

hmmmmm, while a CG retired I question the experience of CG investigators in the stolen car arena . . .

I suspect the actual issue was jurisdiction ..... SF 'first responders' did their thing, but this is Federal property and USCG as OCCUPANT gets tapped.

So not TOOK OVER .... but was STUCK WITH :-)

You are correct that it is Yerba Buena. My ex husband used to work out there when it was still a military base. We Bayarea folks would referred to it as Treasure Island as a whole (obviously the opposite side of the island). After the '89 quake they did uncover objects from the World Fair that had been paved over on Treasure Island. My guess is someone launched the poor baby and that's where she landed. BTW great photo.

TBRoye 05-12-2015 09:56 PM

I think Treasure Island now belongs to the City of San Francisco or is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area. When the Navy moved out it became surplus the USCG may still have a presence on the Island but other than that it is not owned by the US Military.

I'm pretty sure that Jerry Garcia drove that Mini over the cliff. In fact he alluded to it here -

Gonna hop in the hack then turn on the key,
Pop in the clutch, let the wheels roll free,
Not a cloud in the sky, such a sunny day,
Push in the button, let the top ten play.

Capt_bj 05-13-2015 02:18 PM

USCG is most certainly a 'presence' on YBI

At the top of the mound is the Vessel Traffic System home base. This IS the marine traffic control system for the San Fran Bay and the approaches.

And as far as I know, the CG base has not moved off the island . . .

ECSTuning 05-13-2015 02:30 PM

I like the CSI type investigation we have here. :) Funny we are probably more ahead in the investigation then the locals. The roof does not look that badly damaged.

TBRoye 05-13-2015 02:49 PM

The USCG is still there but the rest of the Island is in the City of SF hands. Navy and Feds long gone like so many California Bases including 3 here in Sacramento.

Tom.
