Naming your MINI.
My R53 was named Jasper
My new R56 will be named Black Jack, well as soon as my black jack parts get here on Tuesday.
No name for the R60 yet, going to let my wife name that one.

Previous car was a 1984 Renault Encore. About the time it was spending about 3 months (!) in the shop to get a new transmission (thank you extended warranty company) Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure came out. They refer to Napoleon as "...that short, dead dude from France" which also seemed to describe the Encore, so the name kind of stuck to that car.
Fast forward about 18 years to when I got my used '02 R50. Lisa Simpson had named her second cat "Snowball II" so my MINI became "Napoleon II". I use it occasionally to describe the car, but it's a sore point since the original Napoleon is still in the driveway (anybody out there like French cars?).
Wife's '03 R50 is Silk Green in color. She was picking out names and possible personalized plates (what else is there to do on Highway 93?) on our way back from AMVIV 7 after seeing the Silk Green "Hello Kitty" MINI and falling in love with that color. She finally settled on "MINI Mint" and then went about finding a car. Hers has the matching roof, so it really does look like a big breath mint.

The wife named her R56 Elton. NOT after Elton John. She just thought his name was Elton.
My R53 is named Lana as in Lana Kane from the TV show Archer. She is smart, pretty and curvy plus she is a total bad @ss. My plates say DNGRZON also a reference from the first season of the show. MOST people think TopGun but you know by the look on their face if they really get it.

I have always thought of cars as "women"...or at least been told that's what they should be. But Barnaby just stuck. It was the first name in my head, and I couldn't think of a better name. I've tossed around the idea of maybe adding "Lord" to the start and calling him Lord Barnaby...but that might depend on how I'm feeling day to day.
A couple reasons why I made the exception. 1) MINI's "mascot" is the English Bulldog. And it's certainly not against the rules or unmanly (or some other non PC names people can call you for such a thing) to have a male dog. So I see no reason a car can't have a guy's name....even if you are a guy driving it. 2) there are plenty of famous cars that were male names. Kit from Knight rider. Herbie the love bug. The General Lee from Dukes of Hazard. And you certainly can't convince me that the Bat mobile is supposed to be a "woman", or the Mach 5 from Speed racer for that matter.
So Barnaby stuck.
But, like a few other posters have said...I really haven't ever named my cars before this. I just felt like MINI's have way more personality to them than other cars that naming my MINI felt right.
My sister had a MINI a few years ago and his name was Kensington.

My sentiments exactly! After the first 50 miles messing about on the road I just thought how much of a dashing yet somehow dangerous(ly fun) a car it was and strangely thought of Gary Cooper... Laughed inwardly at the thought - wife said "no, not Gary, but rather CARY" - my star was born!

I thought this was so corny but hilarious. I couldn't help but give a "BA-hahahah"

I named my car Rose MacLaren...don't know why or how it really came about but I blurted it out while either I was driving or riding in someone else's MINI (with the image of my car in my head).
Her name is Lola
I've always believed cars are feminine and should have a woman's name. I got an 04 MC 40 with the JCW package and began pondering an name. The car just seemed too masculine to have a girls name but I was still stuck. I remembered an old Kinks song about a guy that hooks up with a girl only to find out later she was a guy. With that, I named by mistress "Lola" because she is good looking and treats me well, but as soon as you drive it you realize "Hey, this things got *****!".

My previous cars i never really named. '96 explorer was exploder after destroying the flywheel while snow drifting. And my '03 GTI vr6 was simply "the vr6" until it was brutally murdered by a mercedes.
I was thinking of names for the past few weeks after buying the mini and not coming up with anything. I feel like all mini's should have a name, its that little quirk that sets us apart from other car owners. Like vw people stretching the tires until they are on the brink of failure, lol
After blacking out all the chrome on my Pure silver R56, my girlfriend, upon first sight, blurted out BANDIT!. So for the past two weeks i have been calling the car that stole my heart bandit.

I first heard the word "Minerva" from the name of a rare armor in the game Final Fantasy III. I researched it and found out that it was the Roman counterpart to Athena, queen of the gods.
The name Minerva, evokes femininity and strength, with a strong presence.

Well I've never named a car before, but since it's the Mini thing to do I've been trying to think of one.
It had to be a female name and I wanted something British.
So yesterday it hit me....Roxy.
In "honour" of my favorite British adult film actress
When the new Mini's first came out they ran an ad in the car mags with alphabet stickers for your car. I hung onto them b/c I thought they'd come in handy one day. I found them and dug them out last night in anticipation of Roxy's arrival.

His name is Bibi :)
Wow, you guys have come up with some pretty good names. I love Winnie cooper and Mini Pooper
I name almost all inanimate objects in my possession that are important to me (my laptop, my phone, etc.) so no doubt I had to name my favorite possession of all! I have a knack for naming inanimate objects, but I need to be near them to sense their personality (yup, all my friends think I'm nuts and I'm pretty sure that they're right).
My car's full name is named Baby Bibi but I usually just call him Bibi (pronounced bee bee), the name just fits him perfectly. He has a chubby adorable face, he is bubbly and fun-spirited and he will always be my baby. My family and close friends all refer to him by name now, nobody calls him "car." As for gender, my car is definitely a boy, I can't even imagine him as a girl even though plenty of people refer to him as if he were female.
I was taking the dealer's shuttle back to the dealership to pick up my car from being serviced and the driver asked me what I had named him. I was so surprised to get that question, but he told me that most people can't help but name their Minis. As many have said before me, these cars just have too much personality to be referred to as just "my car."

I wanted a British sounding name, so I named mine Ellie. I like to think of it as a more nimble & playful version of Eleanor from "Gone in 60 Seconds" (they both have similar paint jobs).
My first car was a black 1967 Mustang named Betty Boop. I just traded in a blue 99 Chevy Blazer dubbed Babe the Blue Ox (after Paul Bunyan's Ox).

My first 06 mini was Fergie. Traded her a little over a month ago for a 2011 Chili Pepper Red Sport Drop Top. After several suggestions on facebook I couldn't makeup my mind between Lovey (Thurston Howell lll's wife)or Lucille (BB Kings guitar) Sooo her name is Lovey Lucille.
My 04 MCS was named "The Plaid Ghost" because we put tartan plaid checkmate bonnet & boot stripes on it with a matching sunroof graphic -- but we got the name & the plaid design from my youngest son -- he had a favorite plaid blanket that he used to put over himself and pretend he was invisible and walk around the house --- hence he was our "original" Plaid Ghost....
We just picked up our 2011 clubman and are still working on a name for it.... nothing so far...

HoneyRyder, inspired by the sparkling silver (aka Champagne) color and the Ursula Andress character in Dr. No. Sugar Magnolia was a close second.
Mostly, I call her the "little car" though. In contrast to the "big car", a Ford Flex known as Landshark.

I picked it because a) it's fun to say, b) it sounds vaguely British, c) it's kind of goofy, and d) we ate at a local restaurant called Barnaby's (whose logo/mascot is a massive English Sheepdog) right before going to the dealership to order him.
My cars have always been boys, which drives my husband crazy. Well, it drives him crazy that I name them at all, but the fact our cars are male just seems to be adding insult to injury. So I named his motorcycle.
It's funny, though. I always name our cars, but whether or not I actually use the name seems to depend on how much of an emotional relationship I develop with the car. My first car, a black '98 VW Cabrio, was Mickey, and was always referred to as such. I loved that little car so much--wish I still had him! My second (current) car, a silver '03 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, is technically Cisco (like the Cisco Kid), but I never use his name--I call him "my truck." I just never developed an emotional relationship with him. He gets me from A to B, but there's not a lot of joy in the journey, you know?
Barnaby isn't here yet, but I just know once he is he will always be "Barnaby," and not "the Mini." Minis (and my old VW) just have such a personality--I can't not name them!
