Being a newb here (so be gentle with me)(I got thick skin, you have to if you frequent the FJR Forum), i have come from the motorcycle world and when I started my third riding life everyone seemed to wave, however it has dropped off. Back in the 70's with my BMW 2002 it was a flash of the headlights for us 2002ers.

I just got my Countryman (wondering if you coupe guys consider it to be a MINI) I flashed my lights at a Coupe, No response. Now if I could find that Bug Eye Sprite I am sure I would get a flash if it doesnt kill the electrical system

Hey Willie,
I will definitely say that in my Countryman, I don't get many waves. Even from other Countrymen. But considering where I am (college town), I blame that on people just not paying attention or maybe there just aren't enough MINIacs around here. I've had two waves from Hardtops and that's my count so far. I've gotten looks from other CM's... But that's it.
Welcome to the Countryman craze! Love mine!

I got my first wave back from a Chilli red MINI! Yay! He/she had dark tints but I saw the waving arm so awesome. One time I waved at another MINI and he just gave me that "do I know you wierdo?" Look

I always wave regardless is they do not wave back. I have to be careful because I catch myself starting to wave at a Mini even when I am not in my car-I will certainly get the "wierdo look". Anyone else start to wave out of habit?

Sadly enough, Notawagonwife, not many MINI owners wave back here in Savannah. The majority don't even notice a MINI with its lights flashing and a waving driver.

Well we need to keep on waving so that we can change the world and bring world peace MINI style. Yeah thats the ticket. On the bike, expecially being on a Sport Tourer I get snubbed from all the riders, especially the cruiser crowd, but I keep waving.

Yeah it's pretty funny though their expressions are always different. Before I knew about the Wave, when I first got my car I had the biggest smile on my face when I saw another MINI driver and the same look is given. MINI arent common in NY and when I do see one I'm hyped!.

Sooo....I think I figured out why I get so few waves....I was in the parking lot at work and drove past a coworker who stopped and waved as I drove past her. I stuck my hand up to the front window and waved at her. The next day she asked if I saw her. She had not seen that I waved at her because of my tinted windows. I was waving out the front window but, it was about 5:30 and the sun was going down so she couldn't see it. And I live in the great PNW so it's often not too bright outside......

Now...I'm not sure why they don't notice when I flash my lights at them but, I'm going to assume they just can't see me so I don't get waves.

OK now I am seeing a pattern...they don't see us waving because of the tinted windows and when they see the flashing lights, they are thinking the are going a wee bit too fast and there is a LEO in the area, so they are slowing down, checking their speedometer and making sure their seat beat is properly fastened (in case they get pulled over) and putting away anything they don't want the LEO to see....by that time the moment has passed

So here is a question for everyone...I pass another Mini every morning on the way to work. Same mile stretch of road with a 35 mph speed limit. My front windshield is not tinted and I give a wave everyday for the past 2-3 months. Never have gotten a return wave. At what point is it okay to simply not wave anymore at a particular driver?

I tried something today which resulted in positive results. I have been passing many Minis by where I live, and almost never get a return wave. Today I did a little blip of the high beams preceeding the wave. I got a return wave. This is my new plan. We'll see if it is successful.

I wave at every Mini I see, and about 50% wave back.

I am assuming that the other 50% did not see me or do not know about the wave thing!

this morning on the way to work, I saw a MINI Coop HT in my rear view mirror, I slowed so they would catch up to wave but they never pulled along side... my Countryman has a sun roof (or is that a moon roof) and if I was thinking I should have rolled it back and stuck my hand out and waved.

Tomorrow I am sure they will be there as well, so I will give this a try

The wave thing

Well I live in AZ and I can say so far "zero" waves. Lots of Weird looks or stares. I am giving up. That is fine, my Mini and I are happy without any FRIENDS on the road. I am a former Qx4 driver. I must say. People didn't mess with me. Now with my MINI not the case. I am at a light and Pickup's seem to want to show me how tough they are???? SERIOUSLY, sure my JUSTA can really beat your HEMI. I just chuckle. I will catch up and I will beat them in the long run when they have to keep gasing up on the highway, oh yes and then i do WAVE

I have noticed the thing with pickups as well. I guess they really *are* compensating.... Phoenix metro is a tough area for waves, since virtually everyone has tint. Whenever I can safely do it, I wave--or blink high-beams, since nobody here seems to see flashing lights as a warning about a nearby po-po.

C ya,
Dutch

I've seen the same green MINI for quite some time and have always waved and gotten no response. Finally got a wave back around 2-3 weeks ago. I haven't seen him since though.
Just keep waving! Try a different wave each time or add some flare to it.

So I wonder how many members here know who the original joe bfstplk is. If not, they can try googling it. Does the cloud over your head follow you when you're driving your MINI?

Dunno. I'm sure there's a few.

The cloud doesn't usually follow me since I left Dogpatch. Not many clouds in Mordor, er..., Phoenix.

If I were going to get a tattoo, it would likely be Joe Bfstplk and his cloud, with a red circle/slash over the cloud, preferably drawn in the style of R. Crumb....

I got a MINI wave today in KC. I've seen the girl twice since I've had my MINI. She always throws a peace sign with a huge grin. Don't know if she saw me wave back... Cause of the tinted windows. :/

For what it's worth, the black R56 in PHX with Tbird plates will always wave, tint or not! Sometimes I get distracted bc I'm having too much fun driving is all.

Here in Colorado the Motorcyclist always wave when I wave to them from my Ninja. MINIs wave too if they see me drop a window and flail my arm!
