I doubt there will be a video. Good luck that is going to be at least a 2 day adventure. I did it in my last car and it took around 22 hours. If you have access to a lift I suggest using it. The good thing is you won't have to unhook any framing to get the transmission. Oh and one last thing make sure you drain the tranny fluid first.

If you have never replaced a clutch and are fishing around on youtube searching for an instructional video, then it might be best if you found an independent garage that services MINI's to do the job... Not trying to be harsh, just realistic...

Since your replacing it now is your chance to get an OS Giken unit with a lightweight flywheel. These units seem to be bullet proof.

There are a lot of bolts and a lot of torque specs that need to be done. If you do it yourself get someone that has done it and ask for their help. Even if it is not a MINI that they did at least they will have a general understanding. I tell you I will never again do it myself its too much of a pain in the *** for me and I was wrecked by the end of the weekend.

Not hard at all... just take your time, but definitely a no go on you tube. You will need proper torque specs and a buddy also for when you pull the trans.

All clutchs are the same principle pretty much so just removal and assembly are the things that are different.

Ok.....

So, having driven a manual for the last 8 years in my vehicles, I have never had to replace a clutch.

I'm just wondering....

Why is it such a time-consuming job?

Waylen, how long does it take you to do a clutch job in a MINI?

I was thinking I could do this myself when our R53 finally needs one, but now I'm wondering.....

I do everything to the MINI (oil change, brake changes, pulley, CAI, one ball, anything electrical), so would I be able to do a clutch job myself with instructions? I am pretty mechanically inclined.

It takes so long because of the fact that there is so much to remove.

VIPER, it's not a difficult job but it is time consuming. Changed the clutch on my daughter's R53 and the first tme is the most difficult as you have to figure out how to do quite a few of the removals. You're basically removing the front end of the car and the front subframe/suspension to get to the clutch and then it's easy. The tranny removal is basically a one person job once you get to it. I think I could do one in about 8-10 hours now.

Yeah, just make sure the idiots at OS send you an updated flywheel with the hole for a timing tool and also instructions to let you know BEFORE you button up the damn tranny that the new flywheel is 2-3mm thinner than stock and you'll need new bolts.

Having pulled the engine and trans out twice in the last week, I can tell you it's not that hard, it is time consuming.

Doing it on the floor we were able to pull the engine and trans on the cradle, replace the clutch, install a OS LSD and put it back in less than 8 hours.

In all fairness though, we had the front bumper off, both headlights, fenders and axles already removed. That in itself is good for a couple of hours.
