Use a 6 point high quality 1/2 socket. If you are breaking sockets they must be pretty poor quality steel. Use the right tools, because if you don't you'll end up chewing the drain plug up. It is very common for those drain plugs to be over tightened.

Yeah the 1/2 socket or box end wrench fits much tighter and you not round off the plug.

When I first purchased my MINI, it was on so tight, the oil pan/plug had to be heated up a little with a torch to remove.

I have heard some speedy oil places use air impact wrenches to tighten them up

Once you get it off, replace with Fumoto drain valve.

Glad you overcame the over-torque monster.

I changed my oil today and had a similar issue. I first tried to remove it with an open end wrench with no luck. Since I always torque my bolt to spec I hasd my torque wrench handy and removed it with that. I couldn't believe how tight it was. They're only suppose to be torques to 18 ft/lbs..

Nice to hear you got the job done.

Chad

Call me paranoid, but I have concerns about having one of those protruding directly out of the bottom of the car... Something in the road hits that wrong and that's it for the engine.

I replaced the OEM oil drain plug with a regular ( I think it is 16mm) oil pan drain plug. I use a six point closed end wrench to remove it when changing my oil. It only sticks out of the pan by less than a quarter of an inch.

First gens only. Ours are hidden, but the second gens hang down below the engine thus causing more chance of it gettng hit causing damage.

I had the exact same thought. The only way I would use one is with a skid plate because my car us so low.
