JCW Year Model Confusion

Im just wondering why this section is Called "Factory JCW talk (2009+)" - reason being the factory JCW came out in 2008. Or is there something missing with my knowledge on it?
Is the 2008 model also a proper factory 155kW JCW?

Because 2008 was a dealer installed kit and 2009 was the 1st year a R56 was available as a factory installed option.
Is the 2008 model also a proper factory 155kW JCW?
2008 Mini Cooper S JCW gets: 17 more horses, from the Cooper S's 172 to 189.

Dealer parts and accessories do not recognize a JCW until 2009 model year. Perhaps they were available during 2008 but were 2009 models?

From July 2008, customers will be able to order factory-built MINIs that produce 211hp and complete a 0-62mph sprint in 6.5 seconds.

Again all options. What is the build date on the drivers door of your friends MINI? If it is after July it is a factory JCW, if not it is a dealer optioned JCW. But hey believe what you want. Just trying to help clear it up for you.

Production starts in June, on sale in August
That is right from the Motoring file you posted.

october 08. We checked up the vin and everything, its registered as R56 JCW.
So that was my initial question, why isnt the 2008 JCW recognized here if thats when it was launched/sold?

I could presume it was launched as a 2009 model year car. Lots of new cars come out at other times of the year, and most specifically, in the Fall of the previous year to which the particular model belongs. I could even guess that someone typed 2008 where they should have typed 2009 since it was in October of 2008 as you said in the titling and registration. Your friend has an early official JCW. Parts catalogues at the dealer sites don't recogize the JCW before 2009. My point of reference is sewellparts.com.

Im not from USA - but maybe its different that side.
If a new car was purchased in the second fall of a year, does the car get registered as the coming year? eg. Car bought in jul/aug in 2008, will be reg as a 2009 model?

[QUOTE]

For whatever reason the USA did not get factory built JCW's for quite a long time after they were released in other parts of the world.

I have a June 2008 built JCW, registered in September 2008. I am in Australia.

The first production month for factory built JCW's was November 2007, as shown if you look on realoem

I have an October '08 build and it's classified as an '09 FWIW.

Outside the US, there can be MY 2008 factory JCWs. Unfortunately many of us tend to be US centric because we are here.

Hense the name NAM...NORTH AMERICAN MOTORING!!
Mini ships the "US market cars" to the north american market, with slight changes for Canada and Mexico.....
While it is nice to be worldly, we know what we get...often it is cars a few months after their inital introduction...sometimes like with VW, a full model year late....gives the manufacture a chance to "work the bugs out" of initial production in new models.....preventing them from getting bad press.

American model years start pretty early yes? In aus I think a 2013 model typically starts from nov delivery

Could be it?

Rules on how early depend on if it is a "NEW" model or just a carryover....., but in a grup label NORTH AMERICAN MOTORING, it is kinda a moot point...we get what we get....and that is why the forums match what WE get....

That's because it was designed to met the 2009 safety and emissions regulations and be sold as a 2009 model.

I also have a 2008 JCW. It's just different across the pond here in Germany... My build date is 4/22/2008 FWIW.

It's no different than say an VW R32 which in Europe was released one year earlier, ex.- ('03 in Europe instead of '04 in the US)

I think the OP has a valid question and he just wants clarification, not a beat down session. We choose to follow this thread because it's the best Mini forum there is regardless if we are from NA or not.

Cheers
