How are you working on your car without a service manual

I have looked and cannot find a service manual for an F56 anywhere. The only links I found on here went to a BMW site that wants a $32/day subscription. I have a leaking valve stem seal, and was thinking of upgrading the valves and springs while I was in there, but I can't even find the torque specs for the head. Car companies really don't want anyone working on their own car any more, and BMW seems to be leading the pack.

Most manufacturers have made service information available for a fee. That model isn't new at all (looking back at the famous Bentley Publishers manuals, and others like them), and it's therefore unsurprising that BMW/MINI also charge. Sadly, gone are the days of printed service manuals like the ones I mentioned, likely because things change so frequently and often year-to-year even for the same given models. So in general, individuals and workshops alike have to pay to access the information electronically. I know some folks who have done things like pay for the 1-day subscription and download like crazy to save all the service info as PDFs. So that's an option, but obviously will take some time. There were other "bootleg" sources of the factory service information, but BMW corporate shut them down several years back.

Galaxy one,
I don't have a line for any free manuals for the F54 model, but I can point you to one for a F57 Cooper SD
Otherwise..............................
There is a seller on Ebay named kokss3 that is selling digital downloads for almost all the models for $15 / $16 each which is where the F56 manual I linked to originally came from

For most operations at least the physical tech handle will be identical for the 3 cyl and 4 cyl. Big differences are (1) space to work (ask anyone who has dealt with the serpentine belt on the 4-banger, not fun) and (2) presence of an aux coolant pump. Maybe more, but you get the idea: not a lot.

Though if there is one out there specifically for the S+ / 4-banger I'd sure love to see it.

Thanks for the link you provided either way. Solid reference material.

Perfect, I have a Cooper F57! Looks like someone took a lot of time to download all the info out of TIS and compile it into a PDF complete with Table of Contents and everything. Sweet! Might I ask where you got it, and if they have an F57 version?

NBCGLX..... See my reply to Galaxy One above. I got the link from the How To Guides and Tutorials Section of the MiniF56 Forum here: https://www.minif56.com/forums/how-t...tutorials.754/
See the F56 workshop manual thread for the link. Other than that there is a seller on Ebay named kokss3 that has digital downloads for almost all F series cars, I personally bought downloads for F56 Cooper S and F60 Cooper S All 4

Thanks for that! Also, I see you're in York. I'm also in PA, not too far southeast of Allentown. I know it's quite far, but are you planning to participate in MTTS this summer?

MTTS, New Mexico to Washington state is gonna be too far for me. However Mini Meet East is coming up soon (a friend told me it may be in the Allentown / Macungie or Harrisbug area. PM me if you wish

As an aside................... I have discovered that the above mentioned EBay seller also has wiring diagram downloads for many Mini models. Here is link to the F56 diagram: https://www.ebay.com/itm/11567640182...0AAOSwT21jxq38

I prefer hard copies too—they’re just easier to flip through when you’re working on the car. I actually ended up getting workshop manuals for my 2014 from workshopmanuals.org. They have a downloadable version that you can print out if you want, which is what I did. It’s not quite the same as a bound book, but it’s the next best thing.

I just did the same.
Cost me $13.xx for the F54 manual.
At first I had a problem downloading it, and thought "oh no, seems like a sketchy site, I just lost my money", but I sent them an Email, and the site owner sent me a new link - was able to download it. Then it looked like my download ended early and I couldn't open the zip file - I thought again "Oh man, I'm screwed"... but no, tried again and it downloaded.

To be fair at this moment I haven't unzipped it, and there's another utility that apparently I need to open the unzipped contents into a readable form - but assuming it does open and work and has official contents - not a bad deal.

Uh, there's no "just" part for the unfamiliar on ISTA.

But I would love to know how you "just" install a current version (not a dated one) on a laptop. I managed to mostly-kinda get ISTA+ 4.32.15 on a laptop and I'm still unclear as to whether the install I ended up with:
  • is usable for raising the car's I-Level
  • whether it can even get the software updates needed to get to a given I-Level
  • how to get said software updates
Any insights you might have are welcome. That said, I do get your point, ISTA+ was able to clear one code I couldn't otherwise get rid of, and it is solid for diag. Bit of a learning curve but when I need to "get real" with the car -- rare but it has happened -- ISTA is definitely a go-to.
