F55/F56 some questions regarding my upcoming mini order
some questions regarding my upcoming mini order
So I ordered a mini jcw about a month ago and had some question that I think you guys might be able to answer( thanks in advance)
1) seeing that it’s Being built now , is there any chance I’ll be getting the 8 speed gearbox ? In all the videos I’ve been seeing , it shows the 8 speed. But in the configuration it shows as 6 speed
2) I’ve logged into the mini lounge but it does not have the tracker to see where the build is at. Is here a way to track the build of the car?
3) the salesman told me that the bmw loyalty discount is no longer valid , is this true? That’s a big reason I ordered this car.

I thought the 8 speed was optional on the Club & Countryman cars. Also coming with the JCW 3/19 from what I read. Then they have the DCT but not in the USA. Kind of a confused mess, seems like it would make more sense to just do one transmission for all.
#2, last time I used that 2 years ago you could track although it was always behind the info that the MINI customer service had. I'd call them, they have nothing better to do.
#3, no idea on that one. What was the loyalty discount you were expecting?

No idea on transmission, call 1-866-ASK-MINI (275-6464) for better info, and I think the said there was no loyalty discount, but gave me my MINI loyalty since I have been. Should be able to work something out on that
looks like it's going to be the 6 speed auto. I know it's already in production , but I'm wondering if I should wait for the 8 speed. Any thoughts?
I'm a manual person, but wife has 8 speed in her countryman and it is smooth. Not sure if you got any kind of deal, but that most likely will make it a 2020 so may or may not be as willing to bargin. So with that said and if in no hurry then yeah might be worth the wait.
But before you opt for the 8 speed in a JCW my advice would be to test drive a car with the 8 speed. I specifically wanted a JCW with a 6-speed and drove 90 miles to get past 6 or 7 nearer me all equipped with automatic transmissions. I didn't test drive a JCW with an automatic but I test drove an S with an automatic and it was nice, I was frankly pleasantly surprised, but there was also a number of 6-speed S's available too (one of which I test drove) and I would have probably ended up with a S with a manual had I been unable to make a suitable deal for the JCW cause I just wanted a manual since my other car was an automatic. Have to say the manual in my JCW is one sweet shifting transmission.

I would've picked the manual if it wasn't for the way the clutch and shifter felt on the ones I test drove. Clutch is vague and engages really low. Feels like it has a constrictor in the clutch line to slow the take up. Of the 4 I test drove, one was acceptable. I didn't want to take a chance on getting a bad one. I did back to back test drives with an auto and manual at 2 different dealerships. One of those test drives was an extensive one that covered back roads and highways.
I have a 19 JCW HT w/ the 6 speed sport auto. It’s no DCT or PDK but acceptable. Seems reliable after 6k miles. Shift times are fairly rapid when set in sport auto mode. I have a long commute and did not want a manual. I would much prefer a dual clutch transmission but it is what it is with Mini. I would suggest you find one and drive to compare. If Mini does not put their DCT in the JCW down the road I will likely move away from the brand.
I drove the auto and it definitely felt faster than the manual. Shifts are quick and very acceptable. I also have a very long commute but I don't have an issue commuting with a manual car. I ordered an auto JCW because I didn't like the way the clutch and shifter felt on the MINI.
It's been reported that the DCT can't handle the torque of the JCW, The European JCWs will get the 8 speed that is in the Clubman and Countryman next year. Nothing has been announced for the US market yet.

I just sold my Porsche Cayman with a DCT. The transmission was fantastic. My current '19 JCW's auto transmission is close. In normal mode it's a little slower and smoother. In sport mode the transmissiom reminds of a DCT. I really don't think that adding a DCT to a JCW would be that big of a deal, especially taking into consideration of the initial increase of cost of the DCT and the fact that DCTs are throw away transmissions if something goes wrong ( after warranty expires ). Have you noticed that many manufacturers have skipped DCTs on their performance models. i.e. MINI JCW, Audi S4 and S5, Audi RS7, BMW M5. I think there's a message here.
This is what is happening for the UK market JCWs
Mini JCW back in production after six months off.
Unless you've walked into a MINI showroom in the UK in the past five months and demanded to spec up a new JCW you probably wouldn't have realised that the model has been off sale. Production of the 231hp hot hatch halted in July 2018 so it could be retested under the more stringent Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), which is here to stay following all of those nasty emissions scandals.
But now, fresh from its retesting on the continent, the Mini JCW is back - only now with more filters! Order books for the new WLTP-friendly JCW are due to reopen on the January 18th and first deliveries are set for March, when - like pretty much every other retested car on sale - these Minis will have a new particulate filter in their exhaust systems.
You might expect such a change to adversely affect the performance of the turbocharged 2.0-litre up front, yet Mini claims there's been no impact in whatsoever. The quickest variant, the JCW hatch, retains its 6.3-second 0-62mph time and is said to be equally as efficient as before the addition of the new clean up hardware. The story's the same with the convertible, which keeps its 6.6-second time.
Thing is, the WLTP test is quite a bit harder than NEDC. So even though Mini claims its hot hatch is no keener to puff out greenhouse gases, the JCW's listed CO2 output has risen from 150g/km to 167g/km, which - unlike that NEDC number - should be a better representative of what can actually be achieved in the real world. Don't fret if you're in the market for a JCW, however, as the increase is too insignificant to push the model into the next tax band.

We hav a ‘19 JCW 2-door with the 6-sped auto and a ‘16 Clubman with the 8-speed auto trans. Frankly, I think the 6-speed suits the JCW better — the gears are distinctly different, while the 8-speed (to me) feels a bit like a very, very good CVT. There’s no real difference between being in 5th, 6th or 7th gear. The 8-speed is about slightly improved fuel mileage, like the Start-Stop functionality. Let’s be honest, you’re not ordering a JCW because you want to get 35 instead of 34 MPG.
When I ordered the JCW I thought I’d be getting the 8-speed — when I first got it I was disappointed. Ultimately I’m happier with it the way it is.
YMMV.
i agree with the other posters — the folks at 1-866-Ask-MINI are much more useful than the online tool, which is at best weeks behind.

True, but the ratios of those three gears, at least in the Clubman version, are so close as to appear essentially identical. I suppose they could change the ratios for a special JCW version, but that seems unlikely.
I have a 2017 JCW with the automatic and I am very pleased with it ... as long as it is in sport mode. In regular mode, gear changes occur much too early. Sport mode is where it belongs and is a lot of fun. it is also easy to operate manually with the paddles or shift lever. At ~22,000 miles I am very happy with it and have no regrets.
