Turbo Boost 3 cyl vs 4 cyl

Anyone have a source of the different rpm values when the turbo kicks in in the two engine configurations. Standard and Sport mode perhaps. We can ignore the rarely used Green mode.

Wife has the 3 cyl and the rpm range in sport mode before the turbo kicks in is very similar to the N18 we have in regular mode. Not a fan of this and will guide my decision on the next car.

Not a fan in what way? The 3-cyl seems pretty lagless. N18 too. Are you looking for more lag?

The turbo spools up as soon as 1250 RPM on both the B38/36 and the B46/48. The N18 I believe was at 1500 RPM.

between 2 & 2.5k rpm the 3 cyl in Sport mode has a flat spot or lag, same in the Countryman without sport button. Will have to go test drive the 4 cylinder again.

Why do the tuner dyno charts always start about 2500? The Dinan rep on the forum seemed to indicate that was were boost kicked in.

On these new motors boost comes on very early, that is what makes the autos short shift when they are in green mode. The 3 cyl revs more freely than the 4 from my experience, but the power on the 4 more than makes up for that.

I can't speak for tuner dyno charts, but it's a fact that the stock engine will put out maximum torque at 1250RPM - I can only assume this is because of the low-lag characteristics of the MINI turbo.

Both MINI turbos are low lag dual scroll. They wind up pretty fast. After driving both, I did not feel much lag in either. The 2.0L did feel like it had more power, but the 1.5L felt like it could keep up. The charts start higher when you can actual see change in tunes or power upgrades. Lower in the chart you sometimes cant see them.

The 1.5L is a single scroll since it's a 3-cyl

That's true - I noticed all the charts I saw from dyno runs with tunes all started at around 2000 RPM. They're not even measuring as low as 1250 RPM.
