On Board Computer says brake pads shot

So I'm getting a warning message that my front brake pads are worn. When this warning hits how much pad is really left?
Do I havd to replace the pad sensor with every new brake pad install?
How do I reset the On Board Computer after I replace the pads.

Thanks in advance for any info.

This thread has a lot of good advice. Easier to read what's already here than to wait for a response.

I replaced pads and discs about 3 years ago. Lots of options for both with the vendors listed. Got all mine from Way. Either DIY or any drive in service bay can do the job. There's nothing special about MINI brakes, they're just like anybody else's. If you got a warning, that sensor will need to be replaced. It's just a plug in and attach operation.

Since you're on the 3rd Gen forum I assume you are still under bumper to bumper warranty. 3 years or 36K miles. Just take it to the dealer and have him remedy the situation.

I'm over 60,000 miles on my F56 purchased in July 2014. My warranty is gone.

What's more important than brakes on a car. Why even question how much life is left after warning. Personally I prefer someone who knows Mini or BMW cars and sources the best parts for your car. If you DIY it isn't all that difficult. The reset procedures can be found on YouTube.

On a second generation car:
- the pad warning starts long before the pad wear sensor has been triggered and it has been worked out from just the mileage since the last reset, so it's a WAG;
- once the pad warning is down to about 1000 miles or less, the wear sensor has been triggered and the estimate becomes fairly real;
- there's quite a safety margin built in, so driving with less than 0 miles to go isn't dangerous, but I ain't saying the warning can be ignored.

My guess is that a third generation car will behave much the same way, but that's not fact.

Yes, the sensors need to be replaced with the pads. If you are DIY then just have your local coding guru or dealer reset the light.

Its the same with the sensor, just get a new one, one in the front and one for the rear. Which ever one is rubbed off by the rotor.

Pads and sensors.

Rotors, if you below the min. thickness. 34116866297KT front & 34216799383KT rear.
