Hill Hold??

I heard somewhere that the new Mini with manual transmission will have what was called a "hill hold" feature that would add a slight delay to the brake release when you were on an inclined surface. This would help alleviate the dreaded "roll backwards down the hill into the bay" syndrome Bill Cosby talked about once as you were trying let the clutch out. Actually I heard it would work in both directions (activating if you were trying to back up-hill as well).

Can anyone confirm this? I've never had a problem but the wife finds it difficult occasionally.

They all should have it standard. My 08 has it. Works forward and reverse. It's also smart enough that it won't hold you from rolling downhill if that's the direction you want to go. It only prevents you from going the direction you don't want to go.

All F56 manuals will have the hill-hold feature. It works very well. One of the '13 MINI hardtops I test drove had it.

Works great, in both directions on my GP. It's subtle and not intrusive

In my 09, it activates if I have my foot on the brake. I am use to putting on the parking brake and releasing once the clutch engages, so I forget it's there.

works both up and down hill on my 03/2012 all4

must have the foot brake engaged when shifting into gear for it to work

if you use the hand brake and keep your foot off the brakes, hillhold will not engage

It worked great on my 2009 R57 - but on my 2012 R59, it holds for such a short time as to be nearly non-functional. So not all cars are the same, as my dealer has confirmed.

One thing that helps on the R59 is to really press the brake hard when stationary as the hill-holder maintains whatever is the maximum pressure it senses and the extra pressure seems to help. This also helps when you are first getting used to the hill-holder as once it is holding the higher pressure, the brake pedal becomes rock hard, confirming it is holding the car.
