'Lashing Eyes' in the Cargo Area....2 or 4 ?

Odd thing about our new 2021 JCW Clubman (Iconic with all the options): the Owner's Manual refers to the lashing eyes in the storage compartment to secure straps, cargo nets, etc., and has an illustration with four eyes (mounting points)...2 at the front and 2 at the rear (as you you would usually expect).
BUT., our car has only the 2 at the front of the area and nothing at the rear.
Anyone else notice this?

Our 2019 has 4 of them. Here's a pic of 2 of them.

There are also 2 other eyes under the storage floor that are body color.

Thank you, chrunck, for shooting the photo. Our Clubman doesn't have anything like those connection points. Here's a photo of the 2 body-colored 'eyes' on our car.
Weren't there some significant changes to the Clubman in 2020. Maybe this changed and they didn't correct or update the Owner's Manual.
Perhaps others will notice this thread too....and tell what their 2020 or 2021 models have!

Are you sure you have the storage package? I don't believe those 'eyes' are part of it.
Do you have the cubby on the right side?

Yep, very sure. It's an Iconic which I think by-default includes the storage package. Also, our Monroney sticker shows Storage Package.

I spoke with a knowledgeable rep in our dealer's parts department about this today. First, I asked if there was a cargo net available? Answer was: no cargo net for 2020 or 2021....and he seemed to think they no long have the 'eyes' to mount a cargo net. Then he volunteered to send an information request to MINI for a definitive explanation and will let me know the answer in about two days.

My ‘20 has the tie down eyes. Odd they’d ditch them for 2021, makes carrying large items much safer.

Thank you, PNW F54, for the info about your 2020. It'll be very interesting to hear back from my Part's Dept guy as to what MINI says about it!

Odd, does your 2021 have the side pockets in the trunk's side panels?
If it does, then there is a new part number for your side panels I guess.
I posted a 'retrofit' thing here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post4526443 .

The 'lashing eye' has part number 51477271174 and the plastic cover that goes over it has part number 51477274764. There should be cutouts in your sidepanel for these if your sidepanels have the pockets and mesh nets, at least...unless MINI has devised a whole new side panel that is missing the holes!

Apparently mine isn't the only 2021 w/o Lashing Eyes !

Yes, my 2021 does have side pockets.

I haven't heard back from my dealer's parts contact who was checking with MINI USA about it, so I did a bit of googling and found images of a 2021 Clubman JCW Iconic at a Nashville dealer. Attached is an image of the inside of the trunk, showing the side panel and NO lashing eyes (just like mine).

So it's a bit of good news and perhaps bad news. 'Good' news in that mine seemingly wasn't a one-off mistake....'bad' news in that the lashing eyes have apparently been eliminated :(

Wild. Do you have holes in the trunk liners to install them? Doing so might require removing the panel in order to bolt on a bracket that the eye attaches to (will have to consult my photos again ;-)).

If your liners has the holes for them that's be spiffy. If not...well, huh.

Bummer, seems to be another victim of 'cost improvements' (i.e.- margin improvements). I remember the Ford Contour guys back in the day comparing all the 'little' items that were removed each production year, which was called 'decontenting' by folks on that forum. Those folks spent inordinate amounts of time searching out replacement items from salvage yards to put back into their later model year cars that were included in the earlier year models.

Weird for sure. I'll bet if you remove the panel, you'll find that the bolt holes are still there in the car (I hope), so you could bolt in the tie-down rings. It'd be easy enough to drill a hole through the panel to make room for the rings to stick through. And yeah as WhatV8 says, probably this saves a few dollars per car to exclude the rings, some bean counter at MINI must have got a bonus for saving the company tens of thousands per year with this tiny 'cost improvement.'

If you do go down the route of checking behind your panels, I'd kindly ask that you pull off your right side (passenger side in the US) panel and send me a photo of how your cigarette lighter is wired up back there =). I'd love to get my trunk cigarette lighter wired the proper way...

I've decided I'll manage to survive without any!

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions and images. Some of my previous cars have had lashing eyes and some haven't.
I might have missed not adding a cargo net...but it helps by having the bottom storage area: I keep a couple of zipper pouches of stuff there which helps keep 'temporary' items in place.

Picked up my 2022 JCW Clubman All4 with all the bells and whistles in the Iconic package. Sadly, only two lashing eyes. I pointed it out to my salesman when I picked up the car. He was dumbfounded. We checked the other Clubmans he had in stock -- only two lashing eyes. I'd rather have none than only two, which are almost useless, and might damage packages I put back there. The picture in the manual still shows 4 eyes in the storage area.

This is a great thread as I was asking the same question. My fully loaded 2021 F54 doesn't have them either and I have the cargo net from my 2017 I had hoped to use. I do want to see if there is a mounting point behind that panel as I want to affix something there. If I spill takeout on the way home again my wife will frickin kill me...

The White Hooks Aren't Actually 'Lashing Eyes'

Hi eatapc - From what I learned after I started this thread, those white 'hooks' aren't actually lashing eyes. I don't recall what I was told their function was intended to be, but I have found then useful for a cargo net I had saved from one of my previous Audi TT's ....or maybe it goes back to one of my Mazda MX-5's.

Take a look at Post #2 (by chrunck) for a picture of what 'lashing eyes' actually look like.
BTW, as you mentioned, yes, the owner's manual does show proper 'eyes'....so it's reassuring to know that Oxford didn't simply forget to manufacture my car correctly

Ah, thanks, I see now. The actual "lashing eyes" are supposed to be above the lower storage compartment; the two heavy-duty attachment points in the lower cargo area are skeuomorphic or a left-over design feature that no longer serves the purpose it was intended for -- like wisdom teeth in humans. Who knows? (My dealer doesn't.)

It's weird that the owner's manual still shows four lashing eyes. And now that I know what to look for, I note that the picture in the manual of the lower cargo area does not show the lower attachment points that are on our cars. I have a storage net left over from my E46 BMW M3, which I transferred to my M2, and which I was hoping to transfer to the new MINI. But the net requires 4 attachments, so it just gets in the way. I now have two different length bungee cords attached to the two hooks in the lower compartment. Depending on the size of the package or box, I can at least partially secure things with a bungee in order to prevent sliding around. I'll attach a screen grab from the online manual of the lashing eyes that should have been included on the cars.

Most likely for the jack kit to attach to. That's where the jack kit in my R60 clips on.

In our F54, we have the old cargo net from our R55 Clubman clipped to those, with the rear seat headrests and a slime/compressor kit folded inside.

That makes sense. My JCW MINI doesn't have a spare, and the emergency tire-repair kit uses velcro to attach it to any part of the lower cargo area, but I guess the Clubman gets those attachment points on all vehicles whether they're needed for a jack or not.
