Left side of the car (driver side north america) under the inner door sill, just above the floor, about 10" towards the back of the car from the kick area fuse panel.

Do you have a picture? And does the car have the pigtail ready to plug into the power fold control unit?

Sounds like you are looking to Retrofit these on your car??

Have you seen these... maybe they can help with harnesses... as I don't believe the 'pigtail' is pre installed... at least not on my 2005 and 2006 cars here.

I already have the mirrors & the switch, & a complete R53 schematic. I just want to see where the factory put the control module. I'm real handy with wiring, so making my own harness isn't a problem. I was just wondering if the factory gave us the wires already. I have found that many vehicles come pre-wired for OEM accessories. It makes sense to make one harness for all cars, then plug in what the customer orders.

I'm with ya on that one.... The mini stuff listing kind of supports the notion of not plug play with module.... and no "Auto fold" without some serious work... but all is doable with effort I'm sure... a bit of coding and prudent wiring...Finding mating connectors can be daunting... but changing out the male/female connectors is not a big issue if the wires are there.

Reaching out to MINI stuff for some help may give you some good insights if they are open to help.

Good luck... keep us in the loop.

Are the R56 units electrically the same? I know they have different part numbers, & the R56 has mounting tabs cast into the plastic, but do they wire up the same? The reason I ask is because R56 units & pigtails are MUCH easier to come by.

I've got all the parts, & studied both the R53 & R56 schematics. I think it will work. I just haven't had time to do it yet. I am going to test on the bench BEFORE I put them on my car. I don't think coding is required.

Here are the schematics for the R53, R56 (LHD), & R56 (RHD). The circuits are similar, & I believe the R56 control box will work. I will test this out on my bench & report my findings; however, I am optimistic about the outcome. The yellow/green wire that attaches to the navigation system also goes to the ABS/DSC (I've included the ABS/DSC schematic for clarity on this point). I believe this is speed output to prevent the mirrors from folding whilst driving. The R56 module uses two power leads & two grounds, whereas the R53 unit uses only one of each. This is not a big deal, you can tie the two leads together. Just make sure you pull power from a non-switched source, that way the mirrors will continue to fold even after you remove the key. Both modules use pin 12 as the trigger wire going to the mirror adjustment switch, but the lead is a different color; I would use the proper color for your vehicle to avoid confusion for future owners; i.e. blue/violet for R53, yellow/red for R56 cars.

You will need folding mirrors (obviously), control module 61.35.9.177.975 (this is the R56 module, it has mounting tabs, vs. clipping into a plastic holder on the earlier cars), the pigtail to attach wires to said module, & a mirror switch with the folding button; I believe the part number for this is 61.31.6.918.216. I don't think any coding is required for this mod.

Below is a picture for clarity.

Hope this helps!

Looks intriguing. I installed the newministuff kit years ago, but like the idea of an OEM solution. Love the power fold.

I went to look at your folding mirror thread, but there's no pics. Can you please fix the links so we can view them? I would love to see what you've got!

You can see all the pics in my albums.
This was an aftermarket kit, so no OEM button or auto-fold.
