Mirrors folding in when it rains

Our Clubman has the cold weather package that includes the power folding mirrors. Since December 2010 the mirrors have folded in on their own and would not fold back out three times. Once during a car wash and the other two times during a heavy rain.

Sometimes we can move them back to the driving position only to have them fold back in on their own right away. Sometimes they stay folded in and will not fold out. After a day or two of drying out the mirrors will fold back to the driving position and stay. SA said that sometimes happens. I don't really appreciate that answer.

Anybody else had the problem, found out what the problem is and had it fixed? Thanks.

Two possibilities. The switch in the door (drivers) is getting wet and causing a short that folds them in and keeps them that way.

Or the Module that controls them is getting wet.

Here is what is said about power folding in the Wiring Diagram System notes.

"The module for exterior mirror folding is located in the luggage compartment. This module is not capable of diagnosis and is not connected to any of the bus systems. The exterior mirror consists of a mirror base and mirror body. The motor for exterior mirror folding is installed in the mirror base. The mirror is folded in and out by reversing the motor's direction of rotation. The module for exterior mirror folding is supplied electrically by the JBE. The module for exterior mirror folding is connected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The information from the DSC influences the folding in and out of the exterior mirrors."

I believe the module in the clubman is located on the drivers side in the rear.

Edit: can a MOD move this thread to the clubman section

So, if it detects the MINI is skidding, it folds the mirrors in to protect them from possibly hitting something?

I wonder if the OP's MINI is detecting a slight slip when it rains, and goes into mirror protection mode?

No, the module uses the vehicle speed. The mirrors fold out when you reach something like 5 MPH and also you cannot fold the mirrors in while you are driving!

Definitely is a moisture issue. Door wiring harness is a known problem spot for moisture causing a shorts in the locks and windows. MINI recommends using a particular grease to insulate the harness connectors.
