question- do these lights not work at all until dealer programmed? or is the program simply for a bulb out warning

From what I've read, it accomplishes two things: 1) Letting the car know that there are now Xenons installed and 2) Some people here have reported that there is strobing when the lights are first turned on. Apparently the programming fixes this.

Yea , those are the Euro ones 25w retro xenon kit they come silver (gray) and black ( Euro only ) versions. If they are like the Euro regular xenon's , they will have a broader pattern for the light vs US which has a sharper cut off due to the standards.

Hello Sub,

Are you talking about the 25w Euro ones " IMMO" posted ( Black or Gray ) above or the US 25w Gray ones below in this post?

People have installed US ones the 9/2009+ R56 , They will fit the 9/2009+ R56 R55 R57 & R58 R59 US MINIs . Parts linked below. They will need coded at a MINI dealership after install for the Xenon function turned on so you will not get the strobe effect. I bet this is the case for the Euro ones also overseas when they install them over there.

We only get the Gray 25w housing ones here:

Xenon Headlight Titanium Gray 25 W - Left part # 63102347698

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/63102347698/

&

Xenon Headlight Titanium Gray 25 W - Right Part # 63102347700

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/63102347700/

There will be additional coding that needs done.

Go back to this page to see one of the installs on the US 25w gary ones.

Thanks and I hope helps.

Am I the only one unable to get a solid answer from dealers on labor costs for the coding? I've tried several dealers in the Bay Area and they're answers vary from "don't know, we've never done one of these" to "should probably be an hour or so." ????

Got a quote of $149 (1-hour of labor) from my local dealer.

I am having a problem with these retro fit kits. I purchased it from WMW and according to the Mini dealership by me Motorwerks it would cost roughly 1000 dollars for them to install it or 8 hours of work and program it. They said I cannot install it all myself because you have to take off the steering wheel put a whole new turn signal adapter on, then remove the washer fluid tank and put a different size in to fit the ballasts. This seems like the dealer is trying to take advantage of me. I have never owned a European car but I have built and worked on plenty American/Japanese cars over the years and this just seems ridiculous. If all I have to do is plug them in and have a new code run could someone please tell me what the code is so I can tell them that is all I want done?

Sounds to me like the dealership believes you are installing OEM xenons, not the 25w retrofits. They sound dumb, go to another dealer.

Agreed The Xenon Retrofit kit is a direct plug in, no extra parts needed like they wanted him to get.

I successfully installed these new 25w headlights on my 2013 r56S this weekend (only 10 minutes) and they are now strobing. I've been trying to find a dealership here in Southern California to code my car and they are trying to charge me $150+ PER HOUR for coding ??? Seriously ridiculous. They claim it takes ATLEAST an hour just to code for these headlights and even up to 3 hours. What a joke. Now I can't drive my car and it's just going to sit in the garage until I find a solution.

Success!

Things have improved since my post yesterday. A local shop here in SoCal was able to program the lights in.. wait for it.. only 5 minutes take that Mini dealerships! Here are some photos:

oem xenon 25w retrofit kit??-91pijwk.jpg

Last photo: success after only 5 mins of coding at the shop
oem xenon 25w retrofit kit??-liy0oeh.jpg

I installed the headlights myself this weekend and they were really easy. Removed 4 screws on each headlight, unplugged, and then plugged in the new ones and replaced the 4 screws. PM me if you are in SoCal for the shop to get coding done for these headlights. You will definitely NOT pay the prices the dealer is trying to charge. I am a super happy camper
