Drivetrain blow off valve
I just joined the forums, so I wouldn't know. If I had known, I wouldn't have even asked. But my question was not whether or not my question has been answered in the past. To anyone who doesn't want to be an ******* about it, or to anyone who is willing to answer my question, I thank you in advance.
Come on guys... Be nice to the new member...
The supercharger used in the MINI uses a bypass valve... This valve control when the supercharger's boost goes into the intake manifold or not. It is controlled via engine's vacuum.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to get the "Pshhh" sound you are looking for. BUT, you get the very nice (in my opinion) supercharger's whine and there are two ways to amplify it: a good air intake and/or a supercharger pulley.

Seriously some of you need to lighten up. I bet you guys don't know you can run BOV's on some superchargers...

i think you missed his point.
In the amount of time he wasted to write that post he might as well have just answered the question. It would've taken less time...
I just think that lately most people interpret people's humor and/or sarcasm in the most negative way.
Saying that a guy is an a-hole-a-rama just because he snarks off a silly remark about how many times people have asked this question seems a little pessimistic to me. Why look at things so negatively?
I, in the same regard, probably wasted more time creating a "praise to the almighty search" image then dr. phil wasted on typing his delicious sarcasm.
I guess you could read it two ways...
1) dr. phil is a complete ****-wad out to make you feel like the buttnugget of NAM
2) dr. phil was giggling as he typed what he did and was hoping other would join.
I choose to interpret it the later way... and I had quite the chuckle.
There is little place for sarcasm and name-calling on NAM... so I guess they're both neenerheads.

... wow... spent way to much time writing this

To be harsh...
the question comes up all the time, and demonstrates that they think a supercharger is the same as a turbo. While nievite (god, my spelling sucks) is something we all recognize, so it wanting to bolt stuff onto systems that aren't understood.
As for the "search" vs "answer", I'll just refernce two things...
1) Give a fish vs teach to fish.
2) There are some things that come up SO MUCH, that those of us that take time to provide answers get weary. Often, I'm faced with giving the SAME FREAKIN' EXPLANATION over, and over, and over, because no one bothered to find it. So the other side of the coin is this: Is asking for something without using the search the dicky thing to do, or pointing out that the answer is there, and leaving it as an excursize to the student to find it?
I can see arguments both ways, but I know how I'd vote!
Matt
ps, for why this is a bad idea on a Mini, read Corky Bells, Supercharged! and Maximum Boost!. There are tons of other books out there, but these two will do a very good job of covering the basics.

I don't disagree with you.

Sometimes its just easier to ask if you haven't found the exact answer your looking for or if theres an overabundance of threads on the topic..
For whom?
Anyway, BOVs are there because turbos keep making boost when you take your foot off the peal. You need to release the pressure..... If you don't, you get a pressure shock back into the compressor side of the turbo from the closed TB. This is very stressful.
On a SC, it's tied to engine speed so you get the required reduction in boost automatically.
The trade off is that in SCs, you're pumping when you are at light load, when you don't need boost. So it has a bypass valve that vents the downstream side of the SC to the upstream side, letting the SC free-wheel, in effect. This greatly reduces the power required to spin the SC, increasing efficiency.
So, did I cave before you found this?
Also, this was covered in the last issue (or the one before) of MC Squared. (that's a shameless plug cause I write tech articles for them!)

Grow up folks
The tone of this thread is exactly why new people never hang around. The guy/gal asked a simple question and was bashed right out of the gate.
Smooth move guys...

Dr. O, thanks for the "proper" answer.

when joining this website there needs to be a site map emailed to you hi-liting the different functions. i just found out how to subscribe to threads the other day.
but yeah, use the search button
what if the supercharger has something that lets it spool down? could a BOV be used then. i think i heard the mercedes has something like that
