Try spinning it by blowing into it. The fact that it continues to spin as the motor deaccelerates has more to do with the inertia of the turbines and the effeciency of modern bearings. I don't deny that it takes relatively little energy to spin a turbo. My point is the only "free" power is increasing the compression ratio. All manner of forced induction are alternatives to running a higher static compression ratio and have some trade-offs.

Actually, the other pistons not in the power stroke will cause more drag with a higher compression ratio. Nothing is free!

Not recently. I'm oversimplifying all the concepts of forced induction but I'm doing so so that the misconception of free power isn't taken the wrong way. Despite our best efforts turbos create a restriction in the exhaust stream and the compressing of air heats it. These are both part of the "cost" of turbocharging. Supercharging is no different in that it replaces the increased back pressure at lower RPMs with parastatic drag at all RPMs.

That is also true, I was only thinking in terms of total volumetric effeciency and not really looking at what the trade-offs of increased cylinder pressure and the increase in force needed to create this increased compression ratio.
Again with the simplification. lol

I try to keep it as simple as possible and still cover all the bases - pretty hard with these topics though .

I've been around the Horn with engine mods on more than a few turbo cars; porsche, vw, saab, and subaru... It's fairly straight forward to dial in boost and A/F (air fuel). In my experience you dial in more whp as you lean out the fuel, trying to avoid getting too lean to where it detonates. I would run different maps in winter and summer to avoids pings (or worse). But, when you do this you are going to see some crazy egt's (exhaust gas temps) and unless you do a "fix"... you will see CEL (check engine lights) from your egt sensor always.

This is my first go around with a s/c car and I am loving the drivabillity (none of that sudden spool). And also the lack of worry associated with mod'd turbo cars as you anguish over insane EGT, warped exhaust flanges, and the knife edge tuning that seperrates whp and detonation... and also, how could I forget, "boost creep" +1 for s/c's

That's why I'm so interested in staying with the supercharged route, as opposed to twin-charging or going to a straight turbo set-up. Most of the problems I encountered with modified DSMs centered around the heat of the exhaust and the dreaded boost creep and boost spikes. It also seems the supercharged MINI's don't seem to have as many seasonal problems related to tempurature as the highly boosted DSMs.

I'm personally lovin' this cold weather we are having right now. My stock MCS is feeling rather strong about now. Ambient temps are hovering around 25F to 30F.

Any chance you would be willing to share some more details? It would be nice to get a few more first hand accounts. The more the better.

wow... the torque is impressive... but still 225whp for a car that has a head, custom built header, custom tune, injectorys etc... i was hopping for more... i was hoping to see something at least near 260. since about 240 has been made on an m45

Me too, I really thought we would break 250. My car has Randy's head and it is a +1 +1 head...... maybe not the best for the 62. There is some experimenting being done with other configs..... We can get more power if we raise the rev limiter because it is pulling VERY strong all the way up. Since I do not want engine problems just to post a big number I have decided to back off raising the rev limiter.

who has posted 240..... I have my doubts
