How to Lower shifter **** but avoid interference with Borla system

good mini-morning to all fellow mini-brothers and mini-sisters...
Heres is my situation, i got a nice MOMO shifter **** for christmas (see pic)and installed it, BUT i feel like im driving a truck, its way too tall now.
of what i have researched i can get an ALTA Short shifter BUT since i have also a Borla Cat system im affraid i might have some interference issues @ the resonato. i was almost ready to just cut the plastic shifter about 1" but read some posts about "NO WAY, DONT DO IT" so i wont, if your gonna do something, do it right.
so any ideas? can i get the ALTA Short shifter without the ALTA ****? would it lower my shifter **** about 1"-2"?
im 6'3" and have gorilla arms (like a 6"8" b-ball player), so i dont mind having the **** really low, any input would be greatly appretiated.
thanks guys

oh and i ride a 2003 MCs IB

I bought the Craven speed SS that like the Alta can be moved up and down to adjust the height of the shifter but after installing my Craven I found out what's underneeth the car. There is a box that incases the shifter cables that stops the gear lever from droping more then a 1/4 inch. The only way to get a longer drop is to remove the lid to the box under the heat sheild. I belive this would be a bad move in that moisture and maybe other bad things could get in even though there is the heat shield covering the cables. If one did remove the bottom of the plastic box they would then need to "dent" the heat shield and that might get close to the resonator if that is directly underneeth. I emailed Craven speed to find out what I could do about this issue because even though I might not want to go lower, I want the option since they make a big deal about how there SS is able to do it. I got no response from them.

Don't know if this helps as I have never looked at the Mini shift lever but.........

In the old days, I would remove the shifter stalk, cut off the threaded end that the **** screws onto, turn the shaft down, and then re-thread the stalk.

Worked great every time.

Did you try to call the company ? I have never got a return call from Cravenspeed as yet about a solution. I'm going to try and call them and talk to them since they never returned my email.

Thanks for calling; I was glad I got the chance to speak with you over the phone. I always answer emails, and usually quickly, but you stumped me. So I went in search of answers and found none. Then, as everyone knows...those emails that are marked as read are often forgotten, and yours was one of these!

For any other interested parties...

In order to truly shorten the throw, the shaft of the shifter must be elongated below the fulcrum point. As you push the Craven shifter down, that is what is happening. The channel on our shifter allows the driver to adjust up to one inch below stock. The trouble is, there is not one inch of clearance... unless you remove the dust plate. When installing the shifter you will have the option of removing the plate and adjusting the aluminum heat shield to allow a full inch of movement, or leaving the plate in tact and having about half of the adjustment available. Pauliekeys makes a great point; MINI put the dust plate there, so it must serve a purpose. While there is still the aluminum heat shield to protect the shifter and cables from the elements, maybe the plastic portion provides extra protection from moisture. Just because Craven, like other manufacturers with short shifters, suggests that the plate be removed to allow the maximum adjustment, does not mean that it doesn't present the possibility of problems. The great thing about NAM is that if there were issues, you have a community of motorist friends to let you know all about it.

In closing, even if you play it safe and restrict the adjustment with the cover, you will find that even that small adjustment makes a very noticeable difference.[/FONT]

As far as short shifters go, it's up to you, but get that **** on!

Good luck-

I juuust did this! Took the lid off the box and clearanced the heat shield. It didnt look too bad after being done. The heat shield should get warm enough to keep the moisture out.
