Shift **** stopper

How can I get this ring off to lower the shift **** position? with the collor on a MOMO shift ****, this is the lowest you can go. Should I hack if off below the bootie? Does it come right off from below? Does it keep you car from running if you take it off?

Anyone know?

Here's how it looks:

It's the dark plastic sleeve coming out of the boot.

Thanks,

Hey Sandtoast I saw a thread a long time ago about someone who cut theres with a hack saw. If memory serves it took all of 30 seconds or so I guess it cuts like butter

Hacksaw, huh? How about a CHAINSAW!!!! (devious laugh...)

Thanks, but I'll probably try an x-acto knife first, then move on to the heavy equipment unless there is a better solution.

Let me know how this goes. I'm in the same situation with my MOMO shift ****.

Although I think the **** is seated all the way down on the shift staff, I cannot get the **** collar ring low enough to clear the set screws - therefore I cannot tighten them properly. Fortunately, the little plastic fitting sleeve is tight enough to hold the **** on without the set screws.

I'm eventually going to get a B&M Short Shifter, but not right away.

Just lop it off. There are plenty of people with stock levers laying around that if you wanted to go back you could.

That or get an aftermarket lever. I've seen a $25 ebay lever side by side with a B&M and they are all but identical. Get one of those if funds are an issue, or get an Alta if you want an adjustable lever.

Yeah, I'll hack 'er off today- I've already got a Helix Short Shift piece that will be installed when time & money allows. I don't think I will install that myself. I'll post pics when finished.

You don't have to cut it off. Pull the **** off, pop the retaining ring for the shift boot loose (see any thread about changing the shifter boot) and remove the shift boot. Turn it inside out and you'll see that plastic slider is just there to give the shifter boot top something to attach to so it won't wear as it moves. Cut the zip-tie that holds the boot to the plastic bit, remove the plastic slider thing, and you're done. Reinstall the shifter boot making sure you've got the top of it tucked in so the edge doesn't show and you're in business.

Just slides right up off the top of the shift lever once you pull the ****.

Actually, it does not just slide off. (It may just be the '05s) I took off the boot and found that the plastic is firmly secured to the shift post. A little filing and some electrical tape did the job just fine, then I seated the shift **** and located where I wanted the boot to sit, then I did a few wraps of tape below where the boot will sit, then taped the inside of the boot, just like the zip tie. In the end the **** is sitting completely on, and the boot is snuggled right up the the **** collar with no electrical-taped shift post peeking thru. It looks like a pro-job. I'll post pics in the next day or two, or when I have access to a camera.

I have a Momo **** on our '04 MCS. I took the collar and machined out the inside of it for a perfect fit over the shift lever ridge. It could also be done with a dremil and a few hours of time.

I have a MOMO too. I just pulled my boot all the way up over the offending ring without cutting or shaving anything. *shrugs* stays put and looks fine to me.

My 04 MC had the plastic neck stopper on tight.

It took a file, a hack saw and some elbow grease but I finally removed enough of the neck stopper to get the MOMO lower.

For me, it wasn't about the neck stopper showing. It was about getting the **** as low on the shaft as possible. I was able to drop my **** another 1/2 inch, back to the height of the original shift ****.

I also chopped mine recently, and needed a dremel to deal with that dang plastic. Maybe it easily removes with 02/03 but the 04/05 shifters it is pretty much molded onto the stick. Here's a before/after photo:

If it's threaded teflon tape might work better.

The set screws should be against something other than metal. Try some hockey grip tape or electrical tape. A couple passes under the **** gives the screws something to hold onto and it dampens vibration.
