Clutch and Flywheel Combos...

Okay, since the clutch on my car is really starting to worry me, I've decided to get a new clutch and flywheel. Since I'll prolly be twincharging early next year this is a consideration too... So what kinda flywheels and clutchs do you guys have? I understand they chatter a little... Is it bad? Right now I'm looking at a UUC Stage 3 and either their 12.75 or 14lb flywheel. Im looking for something that will be streetable, but will put up with Drag Race(track) and autoX punishment.

I have the SPEC LWFW and stage 3 kit, it has no problem holding my power, but it isnt very friendly driving around town. I am not sure about the stage 2 clutch but I hear its not so much like a on/off switch. fwiw...

I'm not doing major HP upgrades, don't drag race but do 8-10 track days annually & some autocross- my stock clutch lasted 3 1/2 yrs but i just had to buy clutch & flywheel- due to faulty t/o bearing on my 03 MCS with 32k miles and 2 1/2 yrs of track days. Pedal was getting hard and lots of noise when clutch pedal depressed. Dealer agreed to cover labor cost and i bought parts. Thought this was fair- They also gave me my trans for a day and i had Quaife installed.

Debated on stock, SPEC, RPM/M7, UUC flywheel & clutch & talked to few well know NAM sponsors. Got very different advice from the 4 folks i talked to about issues with some products, which to buy, issues with products they didn't recommend & why. Totally different advice from all. I took advice of one and just put in stock clutch/flywheel & don't regret it driving in traffic.

I'm running a Clutch Masters Stage 3 with a UUC/Fidanza flywheel and ALTA 0% crank pulley. It's sick light, super easy to stall, chatters/vibrates/rattles everything, and totally holds torque. It's serious business, and not for the faint of heart.

First of all, the UUC clutch and fw are made by Spec and rebadged. It's all a question of priorities. Stage 3 will take a lot of power, but if you're never going 275+ crank hp, there's not likely to be a need. The stage 2 will be easier to drive. Same with the fw. Light is good for track and autocross, bad for drag. Which is most important? I have a 14# fw and it makes launching more difficult, but I find it to be quicker on the autocross course. I've heard the 12# fw is very difficult on hills, etc.

Bottom line: all will be "streetable" as long as you don't mind noise and having to concentrate every time you leave a red light. If drag racing is more important, stick with the stock fw. If auto-x is more important, go with the 14# fw.

HTH FWIW IMHO

When I opened the box for my UUC flywheel, the paperwork for the warranty said Fidanza on it.

Okay... That is kinda confusing. ANYWAY... I was Looking toward what Webb Motorsports sells, The Stage 3 Clutch and 14# fw. Don't know how this will be, but according to Randy it is still very streetable. My friend's Turbo Jetta which is running around 19-21 psi, has running a Stage 2 Clutch and 14# fw. Who sells the Stage 2?

Fidanza can be used as a dirty word by some in Dallas area. There are two guys in dallas with the Spec clutches that grenaded the transmission by having the retaining pins come out ant tear thru the rest of the transmission casing... one of the guys had this happen twice... (that would make it his third transmission) see threads below for consideration

All things considered Spec treated them pretty well... but definately something to consider... These appear to be isolated incidents... but for it to happen to one guy twice??? Hmmm...

Twice to 1 guy, rare/never for anybody else? Begs the question of whether it was properly installed.
