Drivetrain Magnaflow owners -- WTF?
Gaaaa.
I've noticed that (or maybe I'm just wacked) the Magnaflow seems louder immediately after a carwash. It also seems to have it's good days and bad days as far as loudness is concerned.
Any comments on this or how you've silenced the Magnaflow?
I'm getting close to getting rid of it.
Not there yet but some days it REALLY bugs me.

I don't wash my car. Dirt creates turbulent flow regions that have less drag than laminar flow.
That ... and the long line at the carwash.
I honestly don't see why people find the Magnaflow so loud. I took a long trip this weekend and found the sound from the exhaust to be very slight at highway speeds. Opening the sunroof to the vent position quieted it even further.
Maybe different people are more bothered by different frequencies.

Hehehe!
Where do you notice the loudest sound? Did you use the factory supplied clamps or did you weld it together? How far out the rear of the car do your tips stick? (Mine are about 2.5cm)
Generally, I love the tip but sometimes it gets louder. No doubt.

My magnaflow system was welded in place, the tips are flush with the rear skirt. I have never had any of the droning issues whatsoever. It gets a little lound at WOT and 80-90mph in 6th gear but love the sound. I think it has more to do with an individuals sound tolerance than anything else. You either love it or it drones....no middle ground...just my thoughts..
>>OK, somebody humor me here... What is WOT?
WOT = Wide Open Throttle
Really standing on the gas
It don't get any louder than this

I generally like it, it's just that it seems to come and go. I can't figure it out.
As far as a flush mount goes isn't that pretty close to the plastic?
Has anyone out there in Cooperland had the clamps on first and THEN welded her up?

WOT is the same as FTT (Firewall The Throttle  )
How do you silence the Magnaflow? TAKE IT OFF!, that's what I did.
Interesting that there are so many conflicting perceptions on the Magnaflow.
The drone and ensuing new and unbearable vibrations in my MINI
were maddening. Sure it helped to open the sunroof, but I didn't
like the idea of being forced to open the sunroof in the winter to make
driving bearable. I do miss the extra hp and torque

>>i had my clamped then welded quited a little and i do mean a little but noticable
I think the assertions that the "BRRRRR" sound is coming through the shielding/body.
Now the final question. Does anyone thing this is loud enough where it would do long-term damage to your hearing? Especially to my son?

Mines just the clamps that came with it, I mounted it a bit back so the rear rubber hangers are touching the verticals of the hanger brackets. Sticks out this much:

Further back may lift it a tiny bit, close enough to melt a small bit of the bumper trim flange. I'm certain that each car is different, considering that the magnaflow is made on a jig with little or no varience (as Randy had mentioned) .
The sound? I'd say that the biggest impact upon sound is the weather/humidity... might sound strange but sound varies greatly with atmosphere. Some days ALL traffic noise carries louder. No one in the family has been bothered by it or remarked negatively.

>>anyone in San Diego have a magnaflow I can listen to?
Ditto for anybody in the Long Beach or Cerritos areas. I'm getting ready to do this Magnaflow deal within the next few days. Some of the above stories have got me a little bit (not too much) concerned and I'd love to see/hear it in person. I'm not so much concerned about the noise as the vibration issue somebody has mentioned.
I went in to a muffler shop today and:
1) They hadn't even laid eyes on a Cooper S
2) Said a Magnaflow wouldn't fit
I'll obviously not have them do the job, but I will take her back when complete.
If there is a "Yes" for the above request, please email me on everton.ken@verizon.net. Thanks.

Jim,
Actually, we've found that if you move the system farther out, the noise changes significantly. Take a look at binkydognose's photos - that's about where you want them to reduce as much of the noise as possible.
I totally agree that some people seem to be bothered by certain frequencies than others. I have no problem with the Magnaflow - it is definitely louder, and is therefore not for everyone, but unless you define drone as volume (which isn't really what droning means), than I haven't had any droning issues.
I hope that helps!
Randy

Ah ha, further out.
I'll give it a shot!
The most annoying part is the inconsistancy, IMO. Some days it sounds SOOOO sweet and other times I swear someone has stolen my exhaust and replaced it with a cracked piece of bamboo. BBBRRRRRRRRAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to slide her back and then weld her up. I've made the decision that if I do sell it then it will have to be in once piece.
One last thingy... Where the resonator connects to the Cat did you replace the gasket or re-use the one from Mini?

Yea im ceriouse about the tip thing to ?
Is it possible to pute different tips on it without sacrificing performance !
if so, i could be sold on it or the ucc one
dont know for shure. But the ones on the mag are just to big in my opinion!

I've been reusing the MINI gasket - which really isn't that much of a gasket.
As far as changing the tips - I really think the Magnaflow tips may be functional in shape - they tend to act like a venturi drawing the air out through a megaphone type set-up. If the Magnaflow didn't have the "racetrack" pattern with no real designated exit, I'd say that it's be fine to change them - but with the way it was designed, I'd be leary.
Hope that helps!

Well, my tips are nearly flush with the skirt, they stick out 'bout 1/4". I haven't had any melting issues with the skirt thus far, then again WI. has been really cold and time will tell once it starts to heat up outside. I do wish my tips stuck out a wee bit more so I could see "magnaflow performance" etched into the chrome as seen on binkydognose's photos. Looks great !

Hey, I'm in Madison. Where are you guys?
My tips stick out far enough to see Magnaflow but not as far as binkydognose's seems to.
