Drivetrain Magnaflow owners -- WTF?
>>>>Well, my tips are nearly flush with the skirt, they stick out 'bout 1/4". I haven't had any melting issues with the skirt thus far, then again WI. has been really cold and time will tell once it starts to heat up outside. I do wish my tips stuck out a wee bit more so I could see "magnaflow performance" etched into the chrome as seen on binkydognose's photos. Looks great !

Ok, I moved the exhaust back about another cm or so and replaced the front clamp with one that is more of a sleeve than a band. (There is a photo of one like it somewhere here)
I did that replacement because I heard some leakage around that spot again. I'm wondering if that gets knocked loose with all the ice and crap that hits the bottom of the car here in Wiscaaansin.
It has helped! (The trumpets play, the peasants rejoice...)
Thanks to all who helped.

My exhaust sticks out about 1/2" or so and I am getting some burningof the plastic on the right side (about 2 o'clock). I have noticed that the exhaust moves laterally quite a bit and you need to find a way to limit that movement. I tried some safety wire but the vibration of the exhaust breaks it after a couple weeks. I am now using a couple of heavy duty tye raps (sp?) threaded through the rubber mount to limit the side to side movement. I haven't been able to find tye raps with a metal strap in them yet. I think these might work better. The Magnaflow gets better with time. I have 1,500 miles on mine now and I think it has mellowed out alot. I was not happy at first but love it now.

Do you have a picture of that tie wrap set up?
Just curious. Like to see exactly where you are anchoring the tie wraps.
Thanks

ficcion,
Can't sleep tonight? Got the H-sport stuff today - just the swaybars for now. The rear is indeed 19mm. They both look great! Want to do the front install tomorrow?
I know, I know, I hijacked the thread - don't read this part of the thread then

Im intersted in you saying your exhaust moves quite a bit lateraly, mine does not do this at all. could you guess at how much it moves distance wise?

My exhaust doesn't wiggle from side to side either. Interesting.
Just a question, but did you put that square black factory bracket back on? The one located near the middle of the car. I've talked to a couple people who left it off. Just a thought...

Well it seems that binkydognose has made quite the impact on everyone.
I had the great fortune to take a rinde in his Magnaflowed Mini last week.
I can honestly tell eveyone, that I noticed a louder thatn stock sound, but
it didn't really bother me. I was sold!
I will be ordering mine very soon and using MIke's installation instructions.
Good Job Mike. Thanks again!

ficcion Here is a couple of pix of the tie wraps that limit the side to side movement on my exhaust. It moves only about 1/2 to 3/4" but with my tips being flush it's enough to hit on the right side.
Has anyone else had the Magnaflow tips turn gold color? After about 400 miles (including a bit of track time) mine are now a distinct gold. Not wild about the look. I'm confident I can polish it back to original, but is this normal? I have never had stainless tips turn color before.
I have the magnaflow on my cooper, and it is loud but cool. The tip is huge! Like five inches across! I dont like the look of it. Also the real question is, has anyone got pulled over for the magnaflow?
DK23,
Totally normal. It's from the heat (probably at the track). Mine look the same way. Now that I have the pulley, with a tad more heat, the inside of the tips are actually a little blue.

Got my Magnaflow from Randy today. It arrived at noon. Installed by 8:30 pm (no it didn't take all that time, we had a few beers too!). Now here's the thing. I got 3 miles down the road and the warning light (the one with the "!" in the triangle) came on. I pulled over immediately, walked all around, listened, looked, and then turned her off. I sat there for about 3 minutes wondering what was up (banging on the steering wheel the entire time, I might add). Turned her back on...and...no light. I drove the rest of the way home with no more warning lights. Any ideas? I've got 1,000 miles on the car and up to tonight had not had a single warning light incident.
Oh almost forgot...what a sound! And what a feeling to drive a car that has a sound that matches it's looks. SO sweet!!

efcmini,
It's not related. This is an issue we see from time to time on the S. It's one of those sporadic gremlins that could happen again, or might never for the rest of the life of your MINI. Most of the time, it has to do with the steering angle sensor, but sometimes it has nothing to do with anything. Sometimes, it's also accompanied by the runflat warning and both flash.
When it happens, I haven't ever heard of "rebooting" the car not fixing the problem. It either goes out straight away, or after a few minutes of driving the car after restarting it.
Hope that helps!
Randy

Even though the light has gone out, you still have a fault code stored. I'd get it checked out too see what the problem was. I can't imagine it being related to the exhaust install unless you unplugged some electronics and forgot to reconnect them.

MC SHP, I honestly didn't know this had come up before. I accept what Randy has said that it it might be a coincidental problem...nothing to do with the Magnaflow. It hasn't happened again since that first time (80 more miles clocked). But if you are saying that others have reported a problem with warning lights in the first few miles after install, then I agree with you...Magnaflow needs to address it. Even if it means they insert a disclaimer with the product that says, "Hey guys, you will have a check engine light go on initially, but ignore it". If that was/is the case, and the disclaimer was in there it would have saved my knuckles and steeering wheel from some damage.
Bryan,
Answers for what? I really haven't had but 3 or 4 complaints from folks I've sold to if you are referring to the volume. It's something I let folks know up front, and if that is an issue, we can work with another system.
As far as the warning lights, it has nothing to do wiht the Magnaflow - what I was saying in the above post is that the lights have been seen before on the S - without the Magnaflow. It is a non-related issue. I can see how it may have been confusing.
I hope that clears it up.
Randy
PS: Of course I have a contact - I am a distributor (and I probably sell more of these for the MINI than anyone).

Here are two shots of the exhaust on my Mini. Notice how close to the plastic it is. We will see if the tie wraps work. Exhaust rubbed at 2 o'clock. Hey pictures work!
