There is some funny stuff going on here.

after 50 it may work but I am thinking about the autoX application where you don't get to 50. there is no doubt that at some speed the fan will be a impediment....unless of course its a TURBOFAN....possibly with an afterburner....but I digress....again.

I am very interested in Andy's findings.......

Only if he's a criminal. Didn't Ingsoc say it cools by conviction? So put a big fat, sweaty convicted criminal on your IC and you will not only LOOK cooler, you'll BE cooler! You could do a baseline test with a non-criminal.

On topic - I did not see a horizontal TMIC at Laguna Seca yesterday, but hope I do next year.

SpiderX,
I don't know if 50 is where the fans may not blow fast enough, i just made up the number as an example. But you bring up one of the concerns we have with air flow through (or around for Will) the core. I think that the fans will surely help at some point but what is that speed? At an auto cross, with slow speeds i think both ICs will suffer some from the low air speed, but how much??

Maybe the fans will be an important part of the kit. In fact it would be very simple for us to make it an add on at at least. Maybe i will send Andy something next week after his findings.....

for some wild estimates...

If the scoop is 2" x 10", and all one assumes that about half the air is stalled by backpressure, then you're looking at about 360 CFM through the IC at 60 MPH.

If you use an axial fan like the often derided eRAM that does 1000 CFM at 1 psi as a sucker, the cross over between what it would do at a stand still and the speed needed to create more flow than that would be somewhere around 80-100 MPH. So the sucker would be good for low to not so low speeds, and you can use it at rest to prevent heat soak too!

All these are plus or minus several hundred percent!

Matt

Thanks for taking my concerns seriously.....passive venting is a much better solution.......no moving parts and no maintenance......

You mean the train conductor that was so in debt that he resorted to murder?I remember that. He robbed and killed a guy over not one penny, not two pennies, not three pennies, not four pennies, not five pennies, not six pennies, not seven pennies, not eight pennies, not nine pennies, but TEN PENNIES for every dime he owed! Tragedy.

Randy,
What are talking about? If my memory serves me, I've called you either "Randy" or "Max". In tracing the basis for your post back to its origin, I believe that I referred to "Conehead" as "Bob S.", indicating his first name and the first letter of his last name.

Motor on...

Alta , the way over the top solution would be to isolate the IC and Insulate it. At the scoop end cut out the metal protruding into the intake path. Make a different scoop trim to catch the flow and direct it into the IC. At the rear of the IC attach a duct that turns up and seals to a vent in the bonnet. This would of course require cutting up the bonnet which wouldn’t be popular. Or a replacement bonnet with this designed into it.
I have other thoughts on the matter of the fan operation and configuration with my Y idea.

If this demonstrated nice gains I would go for it/ depending on cost of course

Ignore filters??

Anybody know if there are ignore filters on this site?
Some of the posts here are like a freak show. I don't want to read them but I do anyway and then hate myself for wasting the time.

Thread Spam. It pretends it's meaty.............. but it isn't.

I've used it and found it to be quite effective.

Your welcome to come to the bahamas, there is no better place to test heat soak AND I have plenty of room however driving over here would change the test for you would now be testing a WATER to AIR IC . I know you have been wanting to test one but unfortunaely ALTA has not given anythought whatsoever to seaweed or fish entering the scoop.

But go for it pop the sunroof and get yourself a good snorkel.

Fans may be a intergral part of the IC in the end, but we will have to see. Cutting the hood is not for everyone, and the cost of a new hood os very expensive, turning an $800 IC into a $1800 really quick. But one could be made to look pretty cool! We should get some good info back on monday!

Sounds good, can't wait to see the numbers. If you need a stock MCS (other than an intake, and your pulley in my back seat) in hot weather (Miami, Florida), send the intercooler my way

Miami would be a good testing ground, land of heat soak. While Andy will test & analize the crap out of it; winter weather is a factor.

On another note the more I look at this puppy (it is beautiful), I suspect that at high speeds it will out perform the aftermarket flat mounted IC units and guess that at lower speeds the flat mounts will perform better. So theres my guess which you can all hang me by later.

I am awaiting a couple pieces of test equipment that I lent out, so data unfortunately not be available on Monday. The good news is that I have a bunch of time off before the end of the year, so I'll have time to do lots to testing. Tomorrow I should at least have a chance to install the IC and make sure it fits correctly, etc.

The IC is installed and my hood closes (barely), so I'm off for a test drive.
