Drivetrain Randy Webb's new exhaust

I'd be pretty tempted by a $250 Magnaflow myself! I know there have been others that "just couldn't wait any longer". The main point is Randy will set the price point for this unit to cover his expenses and to make a profit... my feeling is if the man sees the total demand he can expect in the short term, #1, he can determime how many to have made upfront, (I imagine the greater the run, the cheaper it might be on his end) #2, he can set the price point appropriately.
Looking forward to the final numbers/price point/delivery times myself!!

And yes, the WMS system will be mine someday. Gotta pay for that GTI soon though!

So at this point, we know nothing about the exhaust. I'm just not willing to put down $900 for the exhaust + $200 for the valve for a grand total of $1100 when nothing is known about the closed position, the position that I'll be utilizing most often. If the closed system makes 8hp, and then the open system makes 8hp, I'm in even at $1100. If the closed system makes 1hp with an additional 8hp in open mode then $1100 seems a bit extreme and the Milltek or M7 become much more attractive. I'm not going to make a blanket statement that says I'm on the list to buy it whether or not the closed system make negative, zero, or a little power is what I'm saying. Plus, I also see it like this, M7 will be either cheaper or better than the Milltek since they do have the benefit of hindsight.
I guess for me: 1) I won't be running it in open ALL the time or even a majority of the time, 2) Who knows when this thing will be out?, 3) What does the closed system make? 1hp? 3hp? 8hp? and 4) M7 or Milltek may make less, but they also cost less (keyword being "may" for M7 since it's not even out yet).

Oh, and saying you're in at $1100 if this all bears out isn't helping our price point!!

In my mind, I honestly can't imagine that this 3" exhaust will somehow make less power than the 2.5" Milltek. The fella that did get one in Vegas seems to be of the opinion he can really feel a lot of power even in the closed position. Couple that with both SpiderX's and mathewweiss' assertions that in the open mode it made approximately 10-13 MORE hp... well, I guess we can count you in for one right MINIotaple?

Brian told me in Vegas that when they tested the exhaust on his car (with a header and other mods) that the exhaust in the open position made 13 more horsepower at the wheels than the Magnaflow previously on his car. This is NOT 13 WHP total, this is 13 WHP OVER THE MAGNAFLOW. This is what Brian told me. Obviously I don't have a header, software, and other performance mods that would make this same 13+ WHP improvement. Randy estimated the power on my car in the open position to be 12-14 horsepower at the wheels. THIS IS JUST WHAT RANDY AND BRIAN ESTIMATED THE CHANGE WOULD BE, THERE IS NO DYNO'S TO BACK UP THESE ESTIMATES YET. Hopefully Randy and the boys will get some real numbers in the next couple of weeks to keep the hype up about this new product.
I also want some input into the switch. It'd be really cool if it was sort of designed like a ?fighter pilot switch?. You know, where the cover is red and you have to switch the cover up, before you toggle it into the on-off position.

Like you even have to ask, since Rob is buying my Miltek that Randy put on last month. I'm not needing to wait for the switch, as long as I can get it put on when he's ready.Doug
What we need are some dyno numbers on a completely stock MINI (other than the WMS exhaust)... Or dyno numbers on a MINI with the regular mods like intake and pulley as most people interested in this exhaust, if not all, have these mods... I'd say it's a safe bet that the WMS exhaust will make at least 15whp in the open position (total) and probably the usual 8hp in the closed position.
@ Mathewweiss, do you have a baseline dyno with all your mods prior to adding the WMS exhaust? How about we all chip in and send him money so that he can dyno his car and we can get some independant dyno results on a slightly modded MCS? A couple of runs on each setting (closed and open)...

Joel, you know where I can get one done in good ol' Tucson?
I would be happy to do one if its around $50 or so.
No offense to the Milltek.... I own one and like it very much and the guys at stramosphere have been great,,,,but,,,,, if the final build is any where near the prototype...there is no comparison...... this thing is a work of ,,... well maybe not art, but it is beautifully crafted.

No question, the BEST place is Dynocomp in Scottsdale. There is no where here in Tucson to get it done if you can believe it. I actually looked into trying to hook the manufacturer of the DynoComp dyno with one of the shops here in town and no one was interested in investing $100k
Seriously, check them out they are good guys. Randy actually held his first pulley party at Dynocomp.
My next choice would be Evo Motorsports in Tempe. Anders is a regular over at vwvortex. They are just getting into MINI but have done twin-turbo Porsches and high end Astons, Mercs, Ferraris, Audis, etc for a long time. They are even well known oversease!

Send me a PM and we can talk.
Of course Tucson doesn't have one, what was I thinking. If we haven't heard anything from Randy by the end of the week I will call around and see what it will cost. Thanks for the info Joel.

Dyno Runs
I will be doing a full eval when I have my WMS Exhaust here. I have the usual mix of mods... 15% SC, 2% Crank, Alta intake, ignition upgrades. My car has been dyno'd recently with those mods. We'll do all testing on the same dyno. That said, I plan to do a solid 5 runs on the day of install with stock exhaust (no header). Then we'll install the system, run 5 solid runs closed.... allow her to cool down the same amount of time that she had while the exhaust was installed... then run her wide open 5 runs. Obehave will be on hand with his Bim-Com to do his thing there. We will attempt to record on video as well at least one run each set-up. I'm figuring about $200+ in dyno fees... donate if you like!
I feel this will be the only real way to test this system properly. It will be the only mod done that day, and I'll pick a day the ambient temps should hold fairly stable.

The DynoComp dyno is from a company/manufacturer called DynoDynamics. It is different the more common Dynojet setup. Their theory is that the larger rollers of a dynojet add inertial value to the rated HP inspite of correction factors etc. Your car is gonna dyno lower there, but it is probably more acurate compared to road values. Check out their site for details.
The other place to think about would be DynoChips in Chandler. I don't know them too well. I would stick with DynoComp or EvoMS. Probably run around $80-100 bucks for 3 pulls. More if you are doing tuning. Less if you get in on a dyno day. The local VW folks usually do a dyno day a couple of times a year. There was one the beginning of March at Dynocomp. This is the best time to get it done. I think it was like $40 for 3 pulls duing this event.

It really doesn't matter which dyno you use since before and after runs will be done on the same one. I'm not aware of any dynos available to the general public that are traceable to NIST, so all they're really good for is pre and post mod comparison runs.

I'll scrape some money together to help - and let me know when it's gets close and I'll give you a forecast to pick the best day. (even if I'm underway, I'll be able to hook you up)
