Poor Nissens 961604 quality

Nissens GP intercooler have recently became available for a very good price. Picked up today from a store and I was really dissapointed in quality. Just look at this photo. There are pieces of metal left over after cutting process. Doesn't look normal to me.

Is there a reason to use a GP intercooler over one of the ebay intercoolers?

When you are comparing it to the cheaper ebay ones , the answer to that question would be a "yes ". There have been many threads regarding the intercoolers for these cars and the "gp" intercooler is definetely better than the ebay ones at recovering from heatsoak . . Unfortunately with how rare the gp is and.its cost , nissens have released a version of it , but not sure on its quality or ability to recover .

The user (minimanadam) did test quite a few ebay intercoolers and his conclusion was that many even lost boost due to the size /build quality. The posts are somewhere on this forum .

Interesting, I'm still using my stock intercooler but I am interested in the possibility of a high quality upgrade. My stock IC is dented anyway.

What are these things running for in terms of cost? I'm seeing them on ebay for $150-$200 but FCP euro and ECS tuning have them for nearly 3x that cost. Is that just markup?

Watch for Nissen knock offs, we are direct with them. Looks like the price in the USA for the Nissens Genuine unit went up in the last couple months. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-nissens-...er/961604~nin/

Talked about this unit a while back.

Can you pop one open and look inside?
I'm curious if the ones that look like they were punched out by dull equipment, if those are knock offs?
With all those bits of metal "hanging chad" - they look randomly left behind, I'm sure the intent was for them not to be there - meaning they would each be concerningly held on in inconsistent 'almost-cut-off' way. Almost certainly at least some will surely come loose over time with airflow and vibration and age, given how they ended up - from a process that intended to cut them off entirely..

Are the REAL Nissen a high quality made with first-rate equipment? Are the two in this week's recent forum threads both knock offs?

It's a troubling picture.

Actually depending on what mods your are running , the stock intercooler is not that bad. If you are running quite small supercharger pulley and are pushing the car then an upgraded intercooler is definetley a good upgrade .
unfortunately the better intercoolers do start to cost quite a bit , so this is where the " nissens " would have been welcomed due to the pricepoint . ( also as long as it performed as well as the original gp)

I am just wondering if this was purchased directly from a reputable parts place for minis or was it off a site like ebay ?

The problem is that nobody has the proper brackets fabbed up yet to mount it. WMW bought them all and MIN says "NLA" on them....
