Aquamist HFS Methanol Injection Systems

With the group buy going right now I think it would be a good idea to start a thread specific to the Aquamist HFS water/methanol injection systems.

This thread can cover all the systems, HFS-2, HFS-3 and the HFS-4, but please since the R53 and R56 (R55, R57, R58, R59, R60, R61) motors are so different let’s keep this thread limited to the N14 and N18 motors.

It would be nice to collect various system settings such as:

1.) Jet size
2.) Restrictor size
3.) System flow when is SYS mode
4.) Water/Meth mix

For the other settings (THRES, GAIN, etc.) I think it’s easiest to take a picture of the control board.

Another important item is if your car is tuned, is it tuned for methanol and approximate horsepower.

Eventually maybe we can use this data to determine the optimal settings for various configurations.

Also please free to discuss the installation process.

0.7mm restrictor
275 cc/min flow
80% methanol mix going to 100%

I ordered my -4 today. I have no real input as of yet. Any suggestions matching guages or unusual placement?

This was how I had mine set up for a while. I think I've adjusted the P/I-R since then.

I installed mine in a Cravenspeed flexpod next to the tach (pretty ordinary). It would be great if it was offered in matching amber LEDs.

That's what I was thinking about doing. I was hoping maybe some one found a boost gauge that matches. I was looking for one that matched the rest of the gauges. Old school Autometer gauges look like they might be close.

I still am working on getting my boost issue figured out. I've made improvements, I was only boosting 10 psi now after some throwing parts at it I'm up to 15. I have the stage 3 tune from Battle and it should be about 20 psi. Its all on hold for the moment waiting on some exhaust parts.

Ordered mine today as well. I went with this gauge holder.

Just curious what made you adjust it?

Wanted it to be more neutral. That's all.

I installed my HSF-4 last weekend and everything went well. Not really sure about all the adjustments that are available so we left everything to factory defaults. We did adjust the system so it activates @ 12lbs of boost. I'm not sure about the whole restrictor thing though.

That is the sort of setting I am going to be shooting for. Don't want to be spraying too early and I figured somewhere around 12psi would be a good place.

Do you all think that 12psi is early enough? I'm thinking sooner would be better and then have flow increase progressively from there.

So is there still not a pretty good idea of where the JB+ can be turned to take advantage of meth?

Oh I think it can be turned up all the way from a timing and knock point of view BUT you'll be running a lot higher boost. The other day with the JB+ at 50% I saw ~17.1psi. I'd imagine it could be pushing the 22psi limit at 100% and I'm not really excited about running that high of boost.

S motors should probably stay around 50% if people are seeing 17psi. No sense self destructing that little fan. JCW/GP motors (with the bigger turbo) can probably go for the gold since they hit at least 17 stock.

I've seen peak levels nearing the 20psi mark even though my JB+ is still set at default settings. It used to only peg around 14psi but my latest installation of the HSF-4 kit has obviously changed something.

I ran it at 100% with meth, but honestly, the boost is just too high for the little turbo.

And quiet frankly, as weird as this sounds, the car just feels better at lower settings.

At 100%, it feels like an on/off switch. The transition into boost is not seamless....if that makes sense.

Here's data log that I did this evening. The main part of the boost lasted about 3 seconds. It gives an idea of how the temp sensor responds. There is probably some data logging lag.

I'm using the MAP PID because for some reason when I use the calc.boost PID it slows down the sampling rate to ~2 per second. Here I'm getting about 4 per second, still slow but I trying to see if I can speed that up (it might be intrinsic to the car)

The point on the right was 62.6 inHg (15.9 psi), the highest point between the two peaks was 59.4 inHg (14.4 psi). Barometric was about 30.1 inHg at the time.

Your peak boost levels seem low compared to mine which hit the 16 to 19psi range with my JB+ set at factory settings. I wonder why?

The max I've seen is ~17.5 and then it has to be hot outside.

I do have an automatic and I'm not sure how the fabled "over boost" works or how it is triggered. I'm not sure if it is triggered by the kickdown button or what. I usually never push the petal that hard to trigger it.

Today I was monitoring throttle position and was only getting 85% when the pedal was pushed to the floor but not hard enough to push in the kickdown.

I'm going to be tuned for meth on May 3rd by Manic so I'll let everyone know how that goes.

Where does everyone place their nozzle? I've been playing around with the idea of doing a dual nozzle set up where a .5mm nozzle is placed before the iat sensor and the second one directly on the intake manifold. What are people's thoughts with this kind of setup? Since the intake manifold looks symmetrical I don't think one cylinder will get too much meth than the others. I would run 100% meth on this setup. What are your thoughts?
