Motor Blew!!!!!!

It is sad to say my turbo died. Unfortunately with the turbo shooting out oil it messed up the 1st cylinder. The 1 cylinder is only at @ 25psi. It sounds like I need rods and pistons on my car at this point and a new turbo. Any suggestions on what I should do? I was thinking of picking up the billet turbo from Alta as well as the rods and pistons. Has anyone here have these installed on their car? Is there any manufacture that makes rods and pistons?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

Thanks
Jeff

I believe Carrillo is making pistons and rods for the R56. Who knows who the heck has gone down this road in the states though! I would talk to some of the guys at Mini Torque since the UK guys are well beyond what's been happening here in America. I sure wouldn't want to be the guinea pig with an aftermarket bottom end in my N14 engine. That seems like a big ole hole in the ground to throw money into.

What does the compression & leak-down look like on the other cylinders?

In all honesty...any piston manufacturer will make you pistons for it if you give them a stock piston to go off of. Same for the rods.

If you need some guidance, call up your preferred tuner and they can get you set up in the right direction. I know who I'd go with.

The compression levels for 2,3 4 is at 175 psi. I am awaiting word today to find out what is actually wrong with the motor.

You're going to need to do a teardown regardless. Good luck to you as you venture down this lightly beaten path

Look at the prices of everything first. For what it would cost for new pistons, rings, bearings, and rods especially if you are doing all 4. After that it might be worth tearing into the engine and find out what it is messed up and needs replacing. I can tell you are already $2k into because of the turbo you said you want. Might just be cheaper to have that one rebuilt or upgraded. I could only find an n12 for a Cooper fo $4k. I am just throwing these numbers out as it might just be easier to pick up a used engine instead of going through the hassle of tearing it down and rebuilding it. If you are good with how MINI/BMW does things then go for it but, I can tell you from 1st hand expierence working on an e34 BMW that this "ain't you daddy's Ford pickup". Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

I think you have the right idea for an owner that might transition out of the MINI, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Cars come and go. A reman engine from BMW might be the better way to go. I believe a reman engine would have a warranty too. If you're planning to go wild and out and keep this car for 10+ years, by all means go down the unbeaten path and have some fun

Yeah I am thinking of keeping this car for as long as possible. I just found out I will need a new motor since it is completely gone. It's either I get a used motor or do a complete rebuild. I found a shop that can do a full rebuild but need to get an estimate. I will keep you posted on the route I take.

I went with a crate motor when I faced this choice...

Here's the tale.

Cheers,

Charlie

It depends on the money you want to throw in there. If you want to go all the way, rebuilt a motor with the aftermarket pistons-rods, instead of the Cooper S turbo, buy a JCW turbo with JCW exhaust manifold. It makes all the difference, you will be amazed...
Also, buy a boostcut free tune, aka Evolve R, and this combo will net you bhp close to 300.
Good luck!

Anyone here know a good shop that can rebuild my motor? I called 034 Motorsports out in Fremont, Ca and they don't have any experience with Mini. Trying to find someone in the San Francisco - San Jose, Ca area.

If you need a new engine a crate motor is a much better deal over all the individual parts price and labor to put it all together. Also a new engine comes with a 2yr warranty.
We ship motors all the time so we can get you a quote if you email us your address and VIN.

It looks like I am going the rebuild route. I have spoken with a guy in my area who has been rebuilding motors for a while now and he has confident he can do it. We will see what happens I told him to take lots of pics as I will be posting it here on the forum.
