Tunes on the track?

Well is seams that the access port thread has been ruined by people complaining and no one wants to even look there anymore lol or I am the only person that wants to track an R56? . I was just wondering what people have had success with on the track? What maps they run with what results they have had? I have had a couple times when the car falls flat on its face when I smash the gas coming out of a turn but for the most part it runs great! But for serious track driving and times runs we can't have this happening all the time. I was looking to see what had worked best out on the track, tpms vs. Non ect.

I used to get this on and off the track pretty regularly. Coming off turn 5 into 6 on big willow would almost always cause it for me. Right on that slight incline pushing from such a low speed it would fall on its face. Figured out you could let off for a split sec and the ECU would reset giving full power again, but it's still annoying and bad for times.

The calibrator here at the shop was able to fix the problem for me on the street and I haven't had an issue for almost a year. Ive yet to test at the track again though. Been to busy to take my car out and TBH I don't personally see a whole lot of R56's at the shop that like to track regularly enough to provide decent input.

Logging and having some one adjust your maps is probably the best bet. Have you contacted Alta directly? This was a very common problem when the AP first came out. They should have seen this enough to possibly have a fix for it.

I'll ask too when I get into the shop. Although the standard maps are created and managed by Alta, I'll see if the BMW/MINI engineer has heard anything new.

Thanks for the info! I did and they said to data log and send it in but they don't like us to have things in the car on the track, normal driving works great! I did just do the update earlier this week and will be out on the track this Saturday so well see if it helped out any. Do you use the linear throttle or normal map? thanks for checking into this!

I'm a fellow R56 track lover but am currently waiting for my tune to be completed by Evolve. Increased torque exiting out of turns was the main reason I wanted a tune. Our narrow torque band can really suck at times.

My car gets tracked constantly. Alta has been great with any issues the car has had. I was experiencing the same symtoms and called Alta. They said it was caused by the car over loading. Hence why when you let off it resets. I havent been back to the Ring to test since the update but Jeff was hopeful that it will fix the issue.

Here is a video from two weeks ago. Stage 3 92 Octane map.

I thought this thread was going to be about what music people listen to on the track!

I'm glad to see there are some more people that track the cars like they should be!

Sacred, nice video I wish the track I ran was like that one! I might be going up to Road America this summer that should compare lol. Do you run the tune with the linear throttle or normal?

Thanks. My car is an Auto so it is the stock throttle mapping. Road America would be fun. Lots of high speed banked corners.

Hi,

I have a 2008 JCW which I circuit race and rally regularily.

With regard to tunes the main problem I have had is higher boost tunes causing more heatsoak. This happens particularily on long straights where you might do a 3rd / 4th / 5th run a WOT to speeds of 150mph. The air intake temps can very hot, and the ECU pulls timing etc. In these circumstances the higher boost tune may actually be slower than stock.

Most tunes also bring on boost and torque a lot earlier, in the 1.5-3.5k rpm range, but you never use these revs in racing. You need to concentrate on getting better gains in the 4-7k rpm range.

Also I have had problems with water temps when running a bigger intercooler, due to the intercooler partially blocking airflow to the radiator. This only happens under extreme conditions. However, it is definitely worthwhile monitoring the water temp via an obdII device just in case

The other thing is you have to be very careful about slipstreaming other cars you are trying to overtake. This reduces the airflow through the radiator and IC, the air intake and water temps get hot and the car pulls a lot of timing. The mini is extremely susceptible to this. Contrary to standard racing practice you are actually better off not slipstreaming, but keeping wide and getting fresh air.

Here's a clip from a recent rally for anyone interested

Robbo, that’s really interesting and good to know I never even thought about that, but defiantly some food for thought. i know what you mean about the mid to high range power it seems like some of the slower turns i have too much power and the wheels let loose and on the straights i could use a little more.

Over the day i did 4 runs with normal throttle and my last 3 with the tpms map and i has quicker times by about .5 a second around the track with the linear throttle, now i think it may be because i had just been on the track more and was learning it throughout the day
