Drivetrain NEW stock filter VS K&N drop in filter VS aftermarket intake
From what i can see all the intakes on the market do only two things, for one they increase flow by using a better filter, and two they make more noise.
I'd like to see a comparison of a BRAND NEW stock filter VS a Drop in K&N filter VS an aftermarket intake VS the stock intake with no filter, and then possibly another test with the intake tube removed from the TB and letting the engine flow however it would like to.
I would bet money that the k&n drop in will make almost or just as much power as the after market intakes, but i guess we'll just have to see...
PS: i also believe that the HP increases that have been seen with these aftermarket intakes can be said to be as high as they are ONLY because the filter that they were testing it against was a stock paper element filter that was already very dirty. I believe that a new papaer element would show better HP readings than a dirty old one...

New Stock Filter, good. Had one when I got my car. Best selling point is that it's free with purchase of a new MINI.
I did the K&N Drop-in replacement and maybe saw a slight inprovement in acceleration. I was able to "squeak" the wheels in 2nd pretty easily now. But I wanted more.
Then I did the Typhoon K&N and it made a difference! Great acceleration, nice enough to tide me over for a year so far, and yes I love the new sounds from under the bonnet.

1clean,
Much research has been done by many people regarding filter testing. If you search around you will find much info. Most of the filters/intakes offered do produce better air flow, and thus more power. The airbox design or modifications thereof, also assists in a better air flow. For a better idea of what some filters will offer, check out http://www.webbmotorsports.com Randy Webb has tested many and reported results.

1clean,
I encourage you to find someone with an after market air filter and drive an MCS with one installed. The seat of the pants difference between after market and stock will be all the convincing you need and you'll be able to evaluate it for yourself.

1cleancooper, Welcome to NAM, I see it's your first post here. Try using the search feature to make your wish list come true or you could try some of those tests on your own car (stock intake with no filter, intake tube removed from the TB and letting the engine flow however it would like to) and post your results here, I'm sure everyone will be holding their breath waiting. I agree 100% with you on this though "I believe that a new papaer element would show better HP readings than a dirty old one..." This intake isn't on the market;

I dropped in a K&N filter that I received for Christmas. The noise isn't all that different, perhaps a tad louder under full acceleration. But the seat of the pants dyno tells me I'm getting a better low end pull out of the JCW head now. In other words, across mostly 1st, 4th and 5th, with low rpms I notice stronger acceleration.
After I had my MCS for a couple months I bought a K&N panel filter noticed no difference (but of course K&N only claims a 3HP gain, so I didn't expect to notice anything). I got rid of it after only a month or two and got a Pipercross, which is louder, but breathes better because of more surface area than a flat filter. Plus if you do some research you'll find that oiled foam (like the PiperX and Alta) cleans the air better than oiled cotton (like K&N and others).
