Air Filter Kit

Has anyone put one of the aftermarket air filter kits on there JCW. I always run K&N's and never had issues. I know there are cold air intake kits available. Just curious if there data to back up the kids available?

So I am at a loss as to why the available kits are called "cold air" intakes. Basically, all that I have found open the air box, exposing the air filter to the air in the engine compartment. Wouldn't this mean that more hot air from under the hood is going into the engine? The stock air box draws air from the front of the car where the air is presumably cooler. Right?

Now I am no mechanic, and I fully admit that i dont understand a lot of things about cars.

What are your thoughts guys?

Personally, i am just going to put in a K&N filter into the air box and call it a day.

That's what I did on my r59. Could I tell a difference? Yes, I can hear the turbo spool up more, and when I did it, it was worth some power, not a lot, but some and also about 2 mpg difference over all.
Looking at the new F series MINI's, it appears to me that a CAI after market wouldn't do much, as the stock unit looks pretty efficient to me, just replace with a K&N replacement and leave it. Spend the money on the exhaust system and get rid of that ugly inefficient looking muffler.

Vipcustomparts makes a CAI that connects the stock intake. Much better than an open box method IMO.

Duell AG makes a carbon fiber ram air system that is sealed and mates up with the hood scoop. Its the only viable option. The other open intake systems lose power from hot engine bay air.

Im ordering the Duell unit for my 16 Johnny CW.

I like that it actually uses the hood scoop. Doesn't appear they have pricing yet. Do you know the cost?

That unit looks really good, plus the good point is that it uses the hood scoop. Don't know how efficient it actually is, but it's got to be better than sucking in hot engine air. I wonder what the cost, and just what's involved in making the stock JCW hood scoop work.

I'm pretty sure the duell ag one needs a new bonnet to work with that airbox. I could be wrong but that's just what I read.

A new bonnet? Thats just too much! I'll stick with the drop in K&N until someone comes out with something viable.

According to their Facebook post it uses the stock scoop. Where did you get the new bonnet info?

I can't see a company requiring a new hood/bonnet just to have a functional cold air intake. That'd put the cost in the $2-$3k range I'd think.

The stock intake is not all that bad for efficiency and does pull in cold air. The drop in K&N unit make a lot of sense and will be hard to beat, in my opinion.

You can order the K&N filter from Autozone at the moment for $50 with a $10 rebate. I needed some other supplies and got my net cost with a 25% off code down to about $35.
