What exactly does it mean to rebuild a motor ?

Hey

I've read and heard lots of people saying that their supercharger died and that now they need to rebuild the motor/supercharger

I know one reason to rebuild a car/motor is when you have an accident but why else would you rebuild it

And what exactly does rebuilding imply ???
Should you rebuild your motor before adding performance parts (in my case I bought the car at 9000 km and am now at 102000km)

Thx for info

there is no reason to rebuild the motor if the supercharger died. That is unless you have some catastrophic destruction of the supercharger and parts went into the cylinders and destroyed them.
There is no reason to rebuild a motor unless its blowing tons of blue smoke and has low compression. 102k KM is not that much. I have 91k miles and I have no issues with compression.
Rebuilding, at its most basic level would be a honing of the cylinder walls, replacement of all piston rings, replacement of main and rod bearings, headgasket, and possibly oversize pistons with a re-bore if there was damage to the cylinder walls.

in the case where the supercharger dies. Would you just buy a new one a replace it.
Are there advantages of rebuilding a motor apart from performance ?

mgrant, a new supercharger unit is expensive. Usually, when a supercharger died, car owners will choose to rebuild the supercharger because the cost effective is better than to buy a brand new.

Also, it's possible to port and polish a supercharger to get a better flow than the stock spec. Once you are there, why not to port and polish the rest: intake manifold, head cylinders (or change it for better performance spec).

Anyway, before doing those kinds of modification, you have to find a very good MINI specialist (mechanician) to tune up your car and fix everything if it needs. A good maintained car is always a great start before to modify it.

Did you do you 100k km tune up yet?

Rebuild means to take it apart, clean it, and put in all new parts. Just like they did to Steve Austin, you also can build it better and stronger...

Haven't done the 100km tune up yet. What does it consist of? Tighten all the bolts ?

Also once you rebuild your motor, is it as if it was new?

It really kind of depends on what was done during the rebuild. Theoretically, it is good as new if shortcuts are not taken. Reusing perfectly good parts is fine, but some parts need to be replaced no matter what. In other words, it depends on who does the work, and how good they are at it.

I did my 100k km tune up at the dealer (Park Avenue BMW). The 100k km tune up consists: change engine oil, change spark plugs, change fluids (coolant (Prestone) and break lines fluid), change belt, change pollen filter (optional), wheels alignment (optional).

i plan on doing the 100k tune as soon as spring arrives since I will probably use seafoam to get rid of all the junk.

For a rebuild, would the WMW ported rebuilt superchargers be the same?

Every company doing a rebuild of any part will define the rebuild differently. The best thing to do talk to the rebuilder and ask them exactly what their rebuild consist of.

As for our ported supercharger, it is a completely rebuilt supercharger that we also port the inlet and outlet to improve flow.
