Chris, even if the tune says "with no aftermarket parts"? ... what would i need for the stage 2 to be appropriate?

With my mods and a heavy foot I am getting 32mpg average 70% highway 30% city. But pretty heavy foot on the freeway and in the city. Stage 2 is pretty fun!

Though I'm in a JCW and not MCS, I have no idea how people get such high MPG.

Best I ever got was in a 3hr drive where I kept it at 65-70mph using cruise control where I got 34mpg. But when I drive only ~70% highway 30% city, I am maybe hitting 25-28MPG at best.

I'm getting 29-30 now. The AP hasn't changed anything, maybe a little worse on hwy due to the richer mixture. I used to get 31 to 33 with the original run flats without the AP but they were taller tires. Now my S-drives read 3-5 mph higher than reality, so really my gas mileage is higher than 30.

Im not really concerned about the mileage but it would be good if it was better. I don't really drive hwy at all so thats why its probably so bad. Im pretty close to buying an accessport, so ill see how it goes. Im going on the freeway for a while next weekend so hopefully I get it by then

2.5 inch turbo back with no cats, or 3 inch turbo back with hi-flow cats

You may be right but I know the last time this come up they just straight said no 2.5 anything from stage 2 on. That info may have changed....again. Some of requested a sticky thread where each stage could be discussed more clearly but it never happened unfortunately. The maps were written using a 3" exhaust which is why I think they settled on that being the standard answer when the question gets asked.

Honestly this thread is such an unwieldy behemoth I can't be sure what and what's not the latest correct information.

Yeah, I asked this question 2 weeks ago, Alta stated it had to be a 3" turbo back to run a stage 2.

"To run the stage 2 map, you need a 3" turbo back exhaust. Anything smaller you will run a stage 1 map, even if it's a turbo back."

I ended up ordering Alta's cat-back exhaust and a 3" DP from AR Design...

The stage 2 map is made for a car with a 3" turbo back exhaust.

The Stage 1 FMIC map will work if you have some other mods. Intake, catback, smaller downpipe, etc will be fine with that map.

so a downpipe back 2.5" with one cat doesnt make the cake huh?

ive unmarried the AP ... the engine was beginning to sound different and i wasnt liking it. feel like the sounds are getting worse even without the tune. goin to MINI on tuesday for front brakes. also gonna have them inspect the car, i want a clean bill of health before the warranty expires.

what harm can be done if the car is runn at stage 2? not long term ... just a few pulls to see the difference. it was too agressive, so i went back to stage 1 and am now back to stock

You mean what harm can be done with stage 2 and a 2.5 TBE with one cat? Or just stage 2 in general?

IMO what you described should have been the spec for stage 2. It is irresponsible of alta to have designed it so that stage 2 is already entirely for off road use only (no cats) when everyone knows the majority of users are driving around on the road (perhaps exclusively). Save the 3" straight pipe requirement for stage 3. And if I remember correctly, even stage 1 Fmic was added retrospectively...

Alta told me you could run Stage 2 with a 3" Catted downpipe. Just order a 3" DP and you're good.

Richie is right, the stage 2 map is made for a car running a 3" turbo back with high flow cats.

Yep I've always understood it to be with a catted DP. That's what the maps were written with. Running a cattless downpipe is entirely up to the end user.

My mistake... I apologize. I was imposing 'catless dp' when it was simply a freer flowing dp. Now the only prohibitive factor for me reaching stage 2 is that hefty dp install!
