I searched and did not find any updated information. Has anyone found a CARB approved intake? Who was the manufacturer? Are you satisfied with it?

Thanks in advance!

I dont think there are any...companies like AEM and K&N usually have CARB approved intakes but their intakes for the mini aren't CARB approved from what I heard a while back. We are out of luck here in CA...the whole CARB approved law is total BS I think, just another way for the state to make money. Someone tested a MCS with an intake, exhaust and pulley and it passed smog alright even if the mods are "illegal" in CA. I've been caught with an illegal intake and I know this law is a total waste of time and $$$

Yep my car passed smog with my mods, and there still aren't any CARB approved intakes yet. Depending on who you ask, some say an aftermarket intake is legal. According to the state guidline: Any intake manifold or adapter that includes provisions for the OEM emission controls is acceptable. However cops on the street are issuing "fix-it" tickets for: VC 27156 prohibits any person from disconnecting, modifying, or altering an emission control device without authorization from CARB.

I personally don't see an intake a emissions "control" device, its more of a source of O2. It provides air, while the cam timing and PCM "controls" the amount of air drawen into the cylinder. If a aftermarket intake were considered a emissions control device then wouldn't a aftermarket exhaust be considered a emissions control device. A aftermarket exhaust does not require a EO number, as long a the modified exhaust is after the cat. Anything before the cat or to the cat requires an EO number because the cat controls emissions and the exhaust allows the source (exhaust gases) to exit.

The law is the law, it really depends on whose enforcing it that day. CARB should really reconsider modifying their code. Why should they care what I do to my car, as long as I pass emissions. Anyways my friend is opening up a smog shop, his machine has the new cut points. I keep you guys updated on whether I pass or not on the dyno again or not.

I was one of the unlucky ones to get a fix it ticket...it sucked big time.

Our new MCS CAI is being submitted to CARB for approval. We have a connection there which can push the process from 6-9 mos to about 3 - so hopefully it won't be more than about 2/3 months after release that CARB stickers are available.

BTW, our new intake is like nothing else on the market - and it is true cold air. Expected release is Feb '04

Yeah, it's a pain... but just take the intake off when you go for smog (4 years for first smog check for new cars now), and you should take it off if taking the car to the dealer too.

I've spend hundreds of dollars to get mods taken off, get smogged, and then put back on! You gotta play within the rules :???:

Well you shouldn't have to take the intake off to take it to the dealer should you? That doesn't seem right...

The other alternative will be with whatever DINAN has to offer this spring as well. I hope the Madness people get their unit ARB certified, or I will eventually need to swap this unit out for an ARB certified one. Who knows, maybe these new systems will be better anyway.

CalcooperS,

Good info and keep us updated on new findings. I'm in the San Deigo
area and have been stopped and asked if everything was stock, I told them
yes and they held me until someone could come out and test the emissions
on my exhaust....on the spot! I passed and only got the speeding ticket but
what a hassle! I'm in the Navy here and will be gone before I have to serve
up more cash for smog checks here, what a freak'in ripoff! I've stopped
doing anymore mods until I'm convinced I can still pass emissions here if
required to.

Kevin

Sorry to hear that kevin...I've seen that happen before to other people, it definatly sucks!

I was stoped months back and was ordered not asked to open my hood, they saw the intake and gave me a ticket, I had to pass a smog then go to court and show the judge I passed...total waste of time and money!

Kevin what happened that they asked about the engine? The reason I ask is I'm in the S.D. area, in the Navy (where are you stationed) and was wondering about the mod thing( I 've done some, might do more, but at what point does the law have the right to check mods etc. is it a certain speed over the limit? or if they just decide to?

I have the BMP,Rogue,K&N and pipercorss viper and I dont recall a carb sticker for anything. Actually the only mod I have with a carb sitcker is the Plasma Booster from M7. I really dont think the cops will worry too much about under the hood tho they will be too busy writing me up for noise, Jackson racing header no cat and the borla race system, as well as the NOS bottle LOL  Randy

Does anyone know of a CARB approved intake available for the mini? I'm planing on getting one but I don't want to get a ticket if a cop sees it.
