Drivetrain shorter R&P for MCS?
Wondering if anybody is planning to make - or has already made - a shorter ratio Ring and Pinion for the MCS? Seems to me that the stock gearing is way too tall for the car.... this was also the case with my NSX (4.03) .. installing the shorter R&P (4.55) was the best mod i ever did (got the car into the 12s)
FWY milage might be compromised... but a worthwhile tradeoff i would think..

In my experience, changing the final drive can completely transform a car. I would not be surprised if an otherwise bone stock MCS thrashed JCWs and tuner cars w/ a 40-50 HP advantage. Throw in the right suspension and brake mods and you have a super reliable giant killer. Or, do it all and build a virtual super car.
So... This is a call to the tuning community. Please let us in on your plans. When can we have our numerically higher final drive?

Count me in.
Ever since the pulley mod I have been LUSTING after a limited slip diff, but I would hate to spend the $$ on all that labor only to find out a month later that some one offers higher ratio final gears.
example: The Subaru WRX STi redlines in THIRD gear at 75 mph!

I too think the right ratio would better the MCS and know of several autoxers who would agree.
What does the MCS rev out at?

I remember reading somewhere on the boards a long, long time ago that a future LSD will also have different gearing for this purpose.
MCS finishes 3rd in 90 (2nd=70, 1=40), numbers vary marginally by upgraded ecu redline and diff tire sizes.

The MCS has two final drives in the Getrag 6-speed. There are really only 4 forward gears, but through the combination with two different final drives, we end up with 6-speeds. Theoretically, we could have an 8 speed, but the extra gears would be ludicrously low. See this page for more info:

That's the way to go
Anyone know how much this cost and what a "dog engagement" is?

Hmm. thanks guys for all the info.. interesting tidbit on the transmission. Ive never seen a design like that before. I guess to do a lower ratio final drive you might need to change two ring and pinions.. might be a bit pricy (I imagine those gears aren't cheap.. and probably also a bit more complicated to do.. changing the R&P in a honda is fairly straightforward if you have ever broken a tranny open...)

Dog engagement means no synchro. This isn't something you'd want for street driving, heck unless you're a master at shifting you wouldn't want this at all. Without the syncro you're literaly banging each gear in, this doesn't do much for the longevity of the gear box. That being said a "Dog Box" in the hands of a pro will be faster than a box with synchros, but in the hands of an amature would be painful.
I remember seeing an article on this a while back....Hang on, googling....<insert hold music here>....Ah ha! Check out:

Oh yaaah...I remember those. Used to drive 10 speed semis for a short while. Double clutchn all the time. Hate it when I miss the match half way down. Usually means coming to a complete stop to start over
But, motorcycle gearboxes, I could up shift without the use of the clutch to matching delay timing....just lift off gas slightly between shifts and in it goes. Lots a fun
That's we learned heal/toe...absolutely nessesary for down shifting dog gears.
